I was tightening the nut and bolt on the shifter bushing bracket today when the right side bolt snapped clean in half. The nut and part of the bolt fell out, but the remainder of the bolt is still stick in the hole...I assume still threaded in pretty tightly. I banged around on the bushing bracket and threw the gears around while parked, and the bracket itself still seems pretty solid. This is the piece I broke:

Anyone know how bad this is? I'm supposed to be taking the car into the city this weekend, but I'm a little paranoid about how sturdy the assembly is. The left nut and bolt is still on there pretty tight, the bracket itself is still mounted to the rear of the shifter assembly. I don't see any way it could fail so badly that it pops off or anything, but then again, I'm not exactly a car expert or anything. I'm mostly curious if the bolt is actually a bolt that extends down from the shifter assembly above inside the car, or if I'm royally f**ked and it's a stud that's attached to an entire plate or something. if it's just a bolt, then great; I buy another and remove the broken piece from above inside the car. if not...then I guess I get that Barton I've always wanted??

Since the remainder of the bolt is still in the hole, I'm probably eventually going to have to take her in to my mechanic to get it removed and reattached. I guess I'm mostly just curious if there was any danger at all in driving it around, especially if I don't shift hard to begin with.

UPDATE: I just took her out around the neighborhood, and everything felt fine when I went through the gears. Not really sure if I'm sitting on a time bomb, though...

On a side note, if anyone knows the part number for the bolt, that would be awesome. I'm not having any luck on the Ford Parts website.

Those 2 bolts are welded in place so they will not come off. You also will not find a ford part because it is actually a permanent part of the chassis.

The fix is to drill the welded bolt out and put a long 6mm bolt down from the console in the top down into the undertunnel and then just use a nut. when they are tight everything will work just the same way the oem design worked. only difference is when you loosen the nut the bolt will loosen also.

May have to have someone hold the head of the bolt with a wrench ( up in the cabin of the car) tight while you tighten the nut ( unless you want to tack weld it in place.)

George

The best fix is just scrap all the inferior shifter parts lol and use this which doesnt need the rear studs...:D

Thanks for the help! Sounds like an easy enough fix, and don't worry...an MGW is 1000000000% in the near future for me. Been wanting one since day 1
