I just installed my borla sport catback and noticed this surface rust underneath car. Is this normal? Anyone else have this? My car is a 2016 i got with 3 miles, and now has 3200. I dont live in snow and these parts in pic are only that i noticed with the surface rust. Looks like front of differential housing and drive shaft.

Lol a little since im not only one. Just seems like they rebuilt and old rear end and put it on this car. And if they did i think legal action can be taken.

By the time it rusts away, we'll be long gone. This reminds me of railroad track or even railcar wheels, which are left as bare steel. With time, railcar wheels look especially ugly but rust away very slowly due to their metallurgy.

I have no idea. I just think its kinda strange to have that much surface rust and only on that part of car.

This is totally normal. Ford sees no use to paint it if no one sees it from the outside. Like others had said, we'll be long gone before that thing rusts away. I've always heard that the surface rust is supposed to protect it, not sure how true that statement is though.

Either way, it's normal, both my S197's were like this and so is my car now.

Just surface rust. It's pretty normal on untreated metal.

Serious question: Do you actually believe Ford went out, purchased junk rear ends, rebuilt them, and then put them in new production Mustangs? Hope this was a joke man.

As far as rust being a protection, all surface of aluminum is actually aluminum oxide (I.e Rust), as it oxidized on contact with O2, and forms a layer of protection that is bonded to the aluminum structure. As for the iron diff housing, it will be a long, long time before that thing wears away to just rust. It'll be fine.

They do this on some of the greenway trail bridges around here. The initial layer of rust prevents oxygen from interacting with the metal, and it mostly stops the corrosion.

Edit: ^^^ Same thing he said above

Mine looks the same way. It bothers the hell out of me even though nobody else can see it, lmao.
