I' m at peace with the oil change. Have come to the conclusion, it is not if but how much one spills.

Anything less than 1pt - 1/2 qt. Is the master of the oil change. As he passes carrying his bucket of used oil.

Bow with humility, acknowledge and grant him respect. LMAO

Yes, cold is ok for draining the oil but in my experience the filter is much more difficult to remove (my 2017 has the old style filter)
Hmmm... good point - I have a 2016 and it was a bit of a challenge to get the filter off last September when I did the last change. That said, with the right tools, it comes off just fine.

What are you guys referring to as the old style filter?

You calling the screw on filter new style ?

The old style a filter element goes in a canister, that attaches to the oil pump or block?

A tip I picked up here, from a GT350 owner I think, was to use a small screw driver and gently hammer a small hole into the filter near the bottom, opposite to the end that screws into the car. It's quite easy to do, and only takes two-three easy jabs with the rubber hammer. After that, most of the oil in the filter pours into my large funnel that I've put under it, at least as long as the front of the car is slightly raised. After it's finished pouring, I put a plastic bag over the filter, mainly to cover the hole I made, and unscrew the filter. Works well for me and no spillage.

I've learnt it's better to drain when the oil is warm, as it will flow more easy and less of it will remain inside the engine when it's done draining.

PS. Could the guy who contacted Ronin about the missing part let us know what they said? I have the Ronin plug too. Not installed yet, but plan to install it when I change my oil later this week. That somebody else said the same thing happened to him makes it sound like there is a defect there.

My filter looks like this:

Yup that's an oil filter all right .. So what is it to you new or old style? For me its new or common in other words .

Over tighten it, can be a challenge to remove, 3/4 turn after seating.

Prefer WIX, discovered the filter is a bit larger in diameter. Just is not much about the width of the O ring.

Thing is, I can't figure out if you're making a joke or not. I'm going to respond as if you aren't and we'll see how this goes. Please don't take offence.

First, the filter in the picture is of the MY2015, 2016 and early 2017 Voodoo oil filter. The red stuff in the hole is thread locker which is there from the factory. NEVER EVER USE AN AFTERMARKET spin-on filter on a Voodoo even if you can find one; they're almost non-existent in any case.

Second, the top of the filter has a sticker on it about tightening torque. If you torque it as you describe in your post, hand tight, it'll blow the gasket out, which is what happened to the OP in this thread. It has to go to at least 16 ft-lbs or it will come off and spray oil all over your car. Oil change techs who are used to doing filters as you describe damaged a lot of Voodoo's before the filter was switched over to a cartridge type.

Here's the other end of the filter:

Please tell me you were actually joking, okay?

As for old versus new style, after mid-production run of MY2107's the Voodoo had a cartridge filter - an external housing that stays with the car and an internal filter element that drops down inside the housing. Every BMW has this style and it's the style that's on the 4 banger ecoboost engines.

Ok now this clears it up, to me that is old style, from the 50s AC filters.
"the Voodoo had a cartridge filter - an external housing that stays with the car and an internal filter element that drops down inside the housing"

And actually was thinking you might be talking about the 350-500. All good, conversation live are so much easier understood.

Cheers & thanks

Uh-oh.

Oil change today with the Ronin plug. My third with the unit.
The gold cap that protects the inside of the unit was missing. It must have fallen off the car?
I have contacted Ronin about a replacement part. To be safe, I put the OEM drain plug back in for the time being.
Update: I contacted Ronin via e-mail, and their customer service representative was attentive, professional, and sent me a replacement cap free of charge. What a pleasure! I will re-install the unit on my next oil change... probably about 6 months from now.

Funny, the exact same thing happened to me, but I never ended up contacting the manufacturer.... I just went back to the old style plug. Bummer considering the cost.
After reading the response that @datadatum got from Ronin, I decided to contact their customer service department to see if I could also get a replacement cap. Unfortunately they didn't have any replacement caps in stock, so instead they offered to send me an entirely new drain plug at no charge(which would include the cap.) This went above and beyond my expectations so I wanted to make sure I updated my previous post to let everyone know they're a company that stands behind their products and has outstanding customer service!

Great to hear! I have a Ronin plug installed and have done 3 oil changes so far. Works flawlessly and cap in place.

I also drilled a small safety wire hole in the Drain Valve End Cap. That way when I am done draining the oil I can safety wire and secure the valve assembly after draining.

Very nice. Have any pictures of what it looks like when secured?

Well?, I did last week but for some reason I deleted them from my phone. I have to install rear winglets this week end and I will take pictures and post them.
