I wound it up going onto the Turnpike last night using the paddle shifters, and got a little carried away in 2nd and hit the rev limiter.

The engine pretty much "died", for lack of a better word. Not being used to that, it does give you a little scare (ok, a big one!). :)

Although I doubt I hurt the engine, it made me wonder how the rev limiter works. I expected it to "bounce", but it pretty much just pulled power away from the engine.

I did a search (here and on Google), but couldn't find any information. Does anybody know exactly what the car does to protect itself?

Thanks!

That happened to me driving my 2014. Scared me too! LOL Felt like someone just pulled the plug on it! I'd love to have an answer to that one too.

Pretty sure, from past experiences, it just instantly cuts the fuel until you are a fee hundred rpm below redline. It won't simply bounce right back up if there is enough load on the engine, so it may take a second to work back up to redline in any of the gears past first if the tires are not spinning. No harm can really come from it on a warm engine, hell, today's generation of ricers think bouncing off the rev limiter is cool - a fad I will never understand.

Weird that the limiter is that agressive. On my current car (VW engine) it just goes up to 7000 and then stops right there and holds it at 7000 doing the typical limiter sound. No bouncing back.

I guess it's not like the video games where you just ping it off the limiter at 1000 Hz, lol.

Can you post a video aggressively shifting through the gears with the paddles? as well as capturing the rev matching downshifts? I'm interested in an auto and would like to hear and see how they perform as there isnt really any videos out there showing this. Thanks.

I drove a '13 or '14 convertible V6 in manual mode and also hit the rev limited (kind of wanted to see where it was) and I agree it just pulls power, not bounces like some cars. What was funny though is in first to second gear shifts if you let it do this you'd hear the car rev up, then pull power, then if you shifted to second with the button at the right time power comes back on hard. Sounds almost exactly like a manual transmission. LOL

In the USA most cars today won't do that w/o a tune. :)

I had a Golf R and with the stock tune they just cut fuel too. When I went Stage 2+ though, I got the motorsport rev limiter. :D

I have hit the rev limiter a few time and it scared the ish out of me! the first time I thought I missed third gear. When it happened the second time I was paying attention and I realized what it was.

If you want to hear something disgusting, when idling my fusion will not go above 2500 RPM if you rev it. I was disappointed.

Its fuel cut. It takes a couple seconds to recover. No harm done.

Thanks for the replies! It's definitely scary if it's the first time and you aren't expecting it.

I was going to post up about this as today I took my first run to redline in my GT PP. Well, thinking that the redline is still set at 7K like the previous Coyote AND the fact that it was pulling like a freight train seemingly all the way to 7, I stayed in it and it cut out at 6500 rpm. Real disappointing as it felt like it easily had 7k as it wasn't even close to running out of breath. Do we need to get tunes in order to have back our 7K redline??

Was wondering this to. A buddy of mine has a 13 5.0. Cai,x pipe, axal back and the boss manifold +Bama tune and it will pull hard deep into the 7k's

It cuts at 6500 ?? I thought redline was 7k? 6500 rpm is peak power of the engine, makes no sense to cut fuel right there.
