Hello all, great forum.

New to Mustangs, so trying to learn as much as possible. Have a 2021 GT, purchased brand new about eight months ago… After my second oil change, the shop recommended a rear diff fluid change (per their system). With 10K mile on it at the time, I thought they were trying to upsell.

I am looking to keep this car for an extended period of time, any value in swapping transmission fluids & differential fluids at about 30K? If I went with higher quality fluids, like, say Mobil one or Royal Purple, would I have a little better quality of a drive & help for longevity?

I don't do any track, just hard driving on occasion.

Their system will always recommend something on the "heavy duty" scale or the lowest they can find of many. There is no need to do the diff at 10K. And at the risk of invoking the wrath of the expensive fluid gang, there is more importance in regularly following intervals than going with some oil over another. I think the factory is 30K or 60K for the rear diff but it's in the back of the manual.

I get you, I just thought it was strange as I have had a few cars & that is the first time it was ever recommended.

Not many oils will outperform the newer factory fill.

Personally I recommend it, but not out of necessity, just out of going above and beyond on your car care. I changed both my manual transmission fluid and differential fluid at 17K miles. I "upgraded" to Motul DCTF for the trans, and redline synth 75w85 for the diff with some MC XL-3 friction modifier just to be safe. There's no reason to go aftermarket for these fluids, they were just more reasonably priced than OEM while still being high quality, and meeting the Ford specifications for their respective application. I do think the Motul Multi DCTF "feels" a bit better than the stock fluid though, at least in a very minor way. Nothing earth shattering, but I prefer the synchro engagement feel, especially during very cold weather. This fluid is a very small amount thicker than the OE, so my feelings likely aren't unfounded. But since it's the same type of fluid, the difference is very slight.

The transmission fluid came out just fine; I'm not abusive so there was no real reason to bother. But I wanted to make sure any brass from initial synchro wear in was removed.

Diff fluid was a different story. The pinion and spider gears from the factory come coated in a black oxide, which wears off into the fluid turning it very black and gross looking. There was also some break in metal on the magnetic plugs. Nothing crazy, but it was satisfying to remove it and give the diff a fresh start for normal wearing through the life of the unit.

The job isn't the most fun, since you need a lift, or to support it evenly on 4 jackstands to properly fill and measure the oil levels. The plugs can also be a bit scary, since they're threaded into aluminum. I know on my transmission it took some muscle to loosen them, almost to where I was concerned. Your mileage may vary. Always remove the fill plug first to make sure you can refill the unit, otherwise you'll be very sad.

Ultimately it's totally up to you, both of these fluids are classified as "lifetime", with no official change recommendation from Ford. And it's also a little wasteful to drop out the very good factory oils so early on.

That's kinda how I feel, going above in beyond.
