It's job is to sell a ton worldwide, it will be the sales leader. Ford finally learned several years ago to focus on selling models other than the GT, that there is a market for moderately powered cars and especially when they are loaded up with the *full* range of options. There have been so many Foxes, SN95s, and early S197s that had the base engine, but no options were available - and no emotion or attraction. Nothing special, thin margin, clear 'em off the lot type of cars.
And the 2.3EB is an economy oriented engine, but will have enough to make for an engaging driving experience.
It's job is not to "split the power difference" with the GT, because then it will be "enough" and take a chunk out of GT sales and mileage will be poor.
And it's job is to contribute enough to CAFE - which like it or not the Mustang has to do much better with. 54.5 is coming, it's hard, and even the 2.3ETB won't make enough of a contribution towards that in the longer term.
