Piston slap poll

You want piston slap? Buy a Chevy LS1

I have not noticed any piston slap on my GT350 yet and having owned a couple LS1 engined cars, I know what it sounds like.

Keep in mind the LS1 engines are strong and most easily do 160k+ miles. Just because you may have piston slap does not mean you will have problems with the motor.

I still suspect that many people just don't pick up in certain sounds and could still have it just not realize it.

Doesn't take cold temps - just ambient...mine does it until the engine is straight hot. 90 degrees here.

I voted no. Unless I'm deaf I don't hear it. Is it something that you get right away or develops as the engine breaks in?

Ford does have a bulletin out on this stating that it is normal. The biggest question is - if it's normal, why would some not have this "feature"?

Some people are out looking for defects with a microscope and others just drive the car and enjoy it. Also, same tolerances do not mean the same part sizes. Some people have engines with piston/bore fits on the tight side and others not so much.

I've driven my GT350 in below zero temperatures and I don't have significant piston slap. Who knows, someone else might hear it, but I don't. And I've had a vehicle with piston slap before, so I know what it sounds like.

You don't have to be looking with a microscope, that's for sure.

While I agree that, generally, what you describe is the difference between an engine with audible slap and one without - I'd be really surprised here. I'll explain.

I've built engines with off the shelf blocks, pistons, everything - from scratch. The most recent being a boss 302 setup. The block and pistons were ordered months apart and from different places and the fit was perfect (meaning, it measured exactly at factory spec..not meaning that it didn't have slap - because it did, when cold). Zero machining required. You'd have a hard time convincing me that the parts they are using to build these vary enough to cause 2/3 of these engines to have audible slap. Now on the Boss motor that I built, it would go away early, as it came up to temperature during normal driving. My R, If I drive it casually, I don't think it ever really goes away.

Isn't that what you just did? Everyone is using a microscope to find problems? Don't turn your inference around on others, please. ;)
I def don't think you guys are wrong.

Genuinely interested in finding the differences and you cant ignore the possibility that some people just will not notice it. That's why I'd like to find someone locally and listen to the car.

You really should avoid telling people we don't know what we are hearing. I 100% know the sound of piston slap and my car does not have it. Even if it did, it means nothing. My 2002 LS1 Z28 had slap really bad. Last time I talked to the 2nd owner, about a year ago, the car had 100K miles with no engine issues. That is why I say it is a perceived problem.

I'd worry more about the OPG issue which has been a real problem for a few owners, but hey, that's just me:cheers:
