Yes there are in both countries. Entire areas in the cities where the local police avoid. France during recent visit was on a high terrorist alert..
I'm not surprised by the UK, the country has completely slipped away, a lot of things no longer work there. Brexit was just the icing on the cake.
The state of the public health service is probably the worst negative example of a failing state. People die there with curable cancer (We are talking about 20,000 people a year!).
The result of years of conservative politics.

In France and Sweden, the reins seem to have been left too loose for too long.

PS: Our healthcare system in Germany is also heading in the wrong direction.

The best I can imagine is the 50s and 60s, when all the old Nazis were still in office.

Going to disagree with you on this based on firsthand experience. Most of German society and culture into the 90's were clueless.. Leaders had a tendency not to forthright on this period. Case in point. Was part of an information exchange with German leaders.................

1. Free enterprise and the seminar leaders bashed the USA system leaving out the key points most major contracting controlled by the government who subsidized these companies through a high tax rate to underbid foreign county centered competition.

2. Professional development exchanges. German Military leaders and yes some from the WW Wehrmacht would present to Nato nations that their observations based on contact with the British only and never the American. Two weeks later, same leader, different seminar audience comprised mostly by Americans would say the opposite.

cheers

@Hadelson
Where have you been, where did the people in contact come from?
For East Germany it wouldn't surprise me, the traces of the GDR.

I have family in the UK with dual citizshiip. Very familiar with NHS failing and concerns. It's a product based on failures of both conservative and liberal leadership failures.

Family members came home to the US for preventive medical care :(

Noted and observed the same thing in Germany with its tiered level of care system

I added above that the German healthcare system is also developing in the wrong direction.
The basic problem is when public services are privatized and not only the healthcare but also the profits of the healthcare companies have to be financed. The money that is burned every year for returns could be used to pay better salaries to workers (from the cleaning lady to the senior physician), better equipment etc.

Our railroad is also screwed up after it became a state-owned company, controlled by wet managerial dreams. It doesn't have to make money, it just has to serve people's needs.

I know, for some people that's socialism.
Btw. I am not against the idea that there should be an offer beyond basic needs for people who want to or can afford it. There would still be enough returns to be raised by private interests in such a system.

PS: The Conservatives have been in charge of the UK for the last 14 years.

And also some of our largest cities have no-go zones due to gang activity.
I have not heard of this. Which cities?

Forbidden in public are e.g. knives with a fixed blade longer than 12 cm (5"), and the political discussion is currently underway whether this is enough.
Pretty soon they will have to ban kitchen knives. Take away one weapon people will find another. Wash rinse repeat.

The old saying "an armed society is a polite society" is very true.

Here in Ky we went from not being able to carry weapons to needing a permit. The media out cry was LOUD. they said we would have daily or weekly shootouts and no one would be safe. When that did not happen they Gov in Ky decided we can get rid of the permit. the media sang loud and proud bout how there would be blood in the streets. None of the doomsday predictions came true.

Some people are armed and some are not.

Here is the knife I want to carry for CQB, A little costly but proven effective centuries ago.

DLT Trading Releases the Limited Run RMJ Gladius - The Truth About Guns

I remember back in the 70s/80s in Cocoa, Florida there was a part of town known as "Little Vietnam" that was about a 10 square block area that was run by a gang so organized the local police would not respond to 911 calls from that area for any reason. Then finally the state's Governor sent in the national guard and eradicated the gang for good.

yeah, and Labor is gonna fix that RIGHT up. Delusion much?

History in infallible - everywhere and any time, the 'state' is the enemy of the people. There are degrees, of course, but the millions who have died are still dead. Mouthing platitudes about good intentions or "social justice" (pick your flavor) doesn't bring them back from the grave.

Human nature is irredeemable. It never fails to kill its fellow man in the quest for power.

As the Gipper was want to say: the scariest words ever to be spoken: "I'm from the gov't and I'm here to help". We can see the evidence everywhere that "Government is not the solution to the problem. Government IS the problem."

I stopped carrying a pistol about ten years ago. Even with training, I was more likely to injure myself or someone else than I was to ever save or protect anyone. Eventually, I grew up enough to realize that I was not immune to reality.

P.S. I live in a country where the the violent crime rate dropped by half between 1993 and 2022. If you live somewhere else, your situation might be different.

and the FBI crime statistics don't lie. It's amazing the turn-around when crims know certain locations/locales are likely to put up (lethal) resistance. They aren't stupid. They go find the easy targets.

What are you gun carriers so afraid of that you actually carry a loaded weapon in your car?
From a very young age (before most of us here can remember), we have been inundated with "more guns == more freedom". Like a lot of things, it sounds ridiculous and horrifying if you didn't grow up with it.

So it goes.

Certain parts of south-central Los Angeles, certain streets of Southside Chicago, a few areas of Baltimore. I’ll have to look into it again as I had found an article about it from a Pro-LE source a few years ago.
