As far as the Shelby GT, Carroll did not feel the Shelby GT lived up to the 350 name. While a good engine, the 3V did not have the power needed without major modification. Only when the Coyote came out did Carroll feel it could wear the name. That is not to disrespect the Shelby GT. In fact, I would love to park one next to the 350
If sales of the collector car emporium local to me are any indication, values of the GTs are very strong. They go quickly, and bring good money. But I'm sure being a SA-built car doesn't hurt, as well as the name.

The three R’s that have been done are LR044, LR158, and LR191. LR158 is slightly different as he did a wider space between the OTT stripes (2 inches as was the original 1965) and did a Red R in the side stripes. LR044 and LR191 are identical.

- LR044 next to LR158 at the last Shelby Bash this past fall.

@ford20 , no need to apologize for resurrecting this old thread. It's great. I just went through the entire thing....mostly.

To the OP or anyone who picked it up, are the side stripes painted as well? I missed that factoid while ogling the awesomeness and process of this build. The side stripes are very bold and I get the point of moving the GT350 piece away from the busy fender and onto the door.

As I recall it’s all painted. This is an absolutely incredible story that will go down and Shelby/Pete Brock lore. With any luck people will be resurrecting this thread for decades to come.

Overseeing the placement of the side stripes.
Troy we had a 66 GT350 when I was a kid. I’m trying to remember the color of the stripe. I believe the color of the rocker stripe and over the top stripes were slightly different colors. The over the top stripe I think was Le Mans blue right?

We did end up painting the side stripes. That wasn’t the original plan, but Pete disliked the side ones so much and he just started redesigning them. We thought about just doing tape, but in the end decided the only way to do it right was to paint them. He spent a lot of time redesigning the side stripes but I think he had a good time doing it.
This is the sketch he used to design it which is now hanging in my garage. He decided to throw the R in at the end which didn’t make the original sketch.

Both stripes on mine are the same color. I can’t speak to the 66. Pete Brock was no longer with Shelby in 66. I think maybe the disparity in color may be because I believe they only painted the OTT stripes by 66 and just used tape on the sides and paint and tape probably never quite match up perfectly. The color though originally was Guardsman Blue which I don’t think was anything special other that it happened to be the blue they had on hand at the time. It became iconic based on the car that it went on. As for the paint on mine it is an Axalta/DuPont color #4483. Not sure Guardsman Blue is the official name of it, but it is the color Pete Brock picked for the OVC GT350 competition models and then used on my car as well as the two others done after it.

That’s it! That’s the name, yes the lower stripe on our 66 was tape and the OTT was painted.

2017 GT350 now gone to a great home.
This is the top of the heap of the HEP special version and GT350 sign off. I can’t imagine what the value of this incredible Brock custom graphic model might bring at auction with prices about to jump past $200K.

While I will keep my car bone stock--I always felt the factory OTT stripes were too narrow. Wish Ford designers had thought so too. These cars look great.

Man, I love those lemans stripes! Does the middle one flare out further than the others or is that just the angle of the picture?
