I didn't see any other threads on this, so I'll pass my idea along. My Mustang is shadow black with the showstopper red interior. So, I've been putting red accents on the exterior. I bought ruby red grill pony, GT, and 5.0's from CJ Pony. Now I'm working on getting my wheels into the theme. I discovered you can remove the chrome pony from the center cap--just twist a screw driver blade a little on the rear holders while pressing the pony tab.
I stuck them into the lid of a restaurant to-go box to keep them flat while painting. I went to a local paint store who made me a can of Ford ruby red. I started with primer and added clear coat in the end. I'm not great at spray painting, but am really happy with the end result. Now I just need to get some black lug nuts.

I used a flat head screwdriver covered in tape to protect the paint. A plastic trim removal tool would work too.

I'll be interested to see how well they hold up. What kind of prep did you do to the chrome?
Now you need to do the calipers...

Prep was just some light sanding and cleaning followed by primer. Agree on the calipers.

I de-chromed mine :

I popped the caps out when the wheels were off, scuffed the ponies up with a wire brush and 3M pad, degreased, then etch primed them before the top coat :like:
