I don't think anyone is saying that 5w50 doesn't have it's place even in the Gen 2/3 Coyote world, or that it will do damage to the engine.

All we're trying to clarify here is the current Ford recommendation for the engine, which as of now is still only w20/w30 even though some dealerships are saying Ford is now recommending w50.

Those of us with warranties, and I imagine alot if not all 18+ guys are in that boat, like to stick with whatever Ford recommends simply because of the fear of them denying expensive warranty work if they find a non-compliant oil was used.

FWIW I am in the camp of running thicker oil for say track use, and I do plan on running a good 5w30 during the summer. I would love to run a 5w50 but I'll take my chance with a w30 and knowing the engine is 100% backed by warranty.

I thought this was a OPG thread turned critical speed hammering the powdered metal gear to death.
I get the 50wt. debate.
I think I started this mess by pointing out Roush specifying 5W-50 for SC 5.0's
Yikes..................

If a dealership tells you Ford recommends something and they do it and document it there it’s covered. Period.

I agree enough with the 5w50 debates.

True, and if Ford indeed made this recommendation to all it's dealers there would be an official and public communication.

Btw, I called 3 separate dealers this morning in my area (including the purchasing dealer) and asked them for oil changes on my 2020 and to use the recommended oil. All 3 of them told me 5w20. I didn't prod them about using 5w50 as I wasn't really interested in the service anyway, but it's interesting that these guys didn't get the 5w50 memo from Ford that your dealer got.

Harmonics/critical speed isn't an issue for the OE OPG, cause it's rotating on a fixed point.
That statement is flawed.

The harmonic frequencies will cause fretting and micro-pitting/welding of mating parts. Ever see the red dust like particles surrounding the shaft end on pressed assemblies ? That's in addition to the impact like forces being transmitted through the crankshaft and into the attached components.
