Hi All,

I am driving 700 miles to pick up my new (to me) GT350 on Friday. I am taking a truck and an open car trailer since that's what I have. I'm looking for something to protect the car from stone chips. I know a lot of people recommend painters tape, but I was hoping to find a suggestion that would cover more of the car than 2" painters tape. Any suggestions? I need something that would be readily available at a big box store or auto store since I'm on a time crunch. I've seen people using carpet protection wrap, etc. but was just wondering if anyone had personal experience. Thank you in advance!

What about the standard car cover and a couple rolls of painters tape wrapped around the whole car to hold the cover on?

Thanks for the reply! I've read some horror stories on using a car cover for open trailer transport causing scratches, trying to see if there might be an alternative option.

Buy the wide track tape from Amazon Prime. I used it on my car when I picked it up in Indiana and drove it to Seattle. Not pretty but effective.

Thanks! I can't get an Amazon delivery here soon enough (right now I only have the option for delivery on that tape for Monday, can't even pay for expediting). I'll try to see if any auto stores have it.

Just a reminder, make sure the car is washed and cleaned before you put any kind of cover or taping on it. You don't want any dirt/dust in between the covering and your paint.

The car on the trailer behind your truck would be reasonably well protected from stone chips. You have mudflaps on the truck, right? Might be easier to use some plywood and 2x4 to make a deflector for the front of the trailer than to put something on the car itself.

Do not use a car cover, it will flap and beat the paint to death. Just go with the painter's tape and you will be fine. I hauled my race car around on an open trailer and never suffered any damage that I can recall that wasn't caused by the racing itself.

Thanks to all for your responses! I'm going to plan on just picking up some painters tape, it's easy to get and should do the job for just the 12 hours we'll be bringing it back. Appreciate all of your help!

Ther's a product called Road Wrap that is like a heavy cling wrap. I recently sold my pristine Lightning Pickup and the guy showed up with an open trailer to haul it 600 miles behind a big diesel Ford PU. He bought a cheap car cover and was going to put that on it for trailering but I told him - uhhh NO. I had a full roll of this wrap and we wrapped then entire front end of the truck up tighter than a mummy. About the only thing that wasn't fully covered was the windshield but I think it was up too high to be at much risk of a stone chip. He ran into storms on the way home with it but from what I understand it made it unscathed.

Go to a auto paint jobber store and get the yellow 3m used for Automotive spraying applications. It will hold much better then what is available at Depot and Lowes. It will remove easier as well. I used the blue 3m in a pinch towing mine back 1200 miles through a snow storm. I was having to stop and fix the tape every couple hundred miles.
