Old School Burnouts

I’m a big fan of burnouts. There I said it. They’re fun. They don’t have to be tire melting, stay in place roast fests, or 20 foot long twin tire mark pieces of art that would make Roadkill jealous. I’m pretty simple, just give me 5 good feet of rubber and I’m happy. Trouble is I’m having trouble doing that. I feel like my 2018 GT automatic 3.53 gears should have plenty of power to pull that off, but it really doesn’t want to. I’ve played with all the driving modes and turning off the nannies and I’m just not getting that ‘69 Chevelle 396 /383 Road Runner peel out I’m looking for. I’ve gotten chirps for sure, but I just wanna lay some tire down. I know I can use the line lock, and that’s cool, but I just wanna stab the throttle and hear some squealing. Does anybody understand what I’m talking about? What gives?

Don't you just have to turn off advancetrac (hold the TC button vs. Tapping it once) and brake all the way down, start flooring it and slowly let off the brake till you start burning rubber?

Yeah I could “power brake” it, as we used to say in high school. That was normally done with underpowered small blocks etc. But I’m just thinking the ‘stang should have enough juice where I shouldn’t have to. Anybody doing the kind of old school burn outs I’m talking about?

I've only tried once, and the amount of wheel hop was unbelievable so I backed off immediately. I know there's upgrade kits that will stop that but it's nothing I would want to do on a regular basis anyway. The cost of replacing tires more often than necessary doesn't appeal to me so I'm trying to not spin the tires at all.

THANK YOU. Thank you for asking this, glad I am not alone. I have been wondering the same thing (even though I am in an ecoboost) Im pretty sure it has to do with the 10R80 internal ratios and the ECU stopping us from doing it. Sure turning advance trak off helps a little....but not enough if you ask me.

My 2017 Mustang would burn the tires in 1-2 gears and screech in 3 and 4 in the 6R80. Much more satisfying

This is my 65 as code 4 speed Fastback that was my daily driver in a high school. These pics are from Terminal Island Raceway in about 1994 when I was a junior in HS running 11.80’s

My 2018 PP1 breaks the tire easily with traction control on, but if I want to sustain it I need to completely disable TC.

I have many drivetrain and suspension mods: one piece drive shaft, upgraded axles, subframe connectors, upgraded front and rear control arms and tension links, IRS bushing lockouts, rear vertical links, 305/35/19s on the rear, etc... and a few engine mods...

Just not a big fan of breaking traction... it's usually unintentional

The IRS kills good burnouts. The best burnout machine I ever had was my 1997 Cobra with a solid rear axle. Only 305 hp but could light ‘‘em up forever.

Believe it or not when I got my 17 eco, within the first year I snapped my drive shaft in half just from full sending it from a stop. Haven't tried to go pedal to the metal in my 20 GT

Yes, you can install a ABS cutoff switch. When you want to burn out for 5 or 10 feet just push the deactivation button which turns ALL Stability Trac, ABS ETC off just like they do when on a dyno. Then when your done, push the button to reactivate systems. I've been talking with a shop which makes the wiring harness with push button, complete. You plug it inline on your ABS power wire located under your air box, then route the wire/button through an engine bay fire wall plug and mount where ever inside your car. I will be ordering one this coming week for I am like you, I love burning tires for 5 or 10 feet once in a while for fun. Good luck. FYI: People say by pressing the traction button down does not totally deactivate the system fully.

It’s almost unbelievable how easy an oldschool burnout is.

Put in S/Manual mode, flip the traction control switch off, and literally do whatever you want the car to do.
The tires (even my fatter 285 squared) break free with not even a hint of effort. You should be able to do figure 8 smoke shows at any given time, without effort - in the 5.0.
I couldn’t believe how low the effort level was to destroy tires.

I am a 19GT A10. Their are threads where people who drag race state the ABS, Stability Trac System does not fully disable while in S mode or when in Drag mode etc when car starts to slide side ways. For me, I just feel it would be so easy, while in any mode, be able to quickly push a button, have some fun, then push the button again to reactivate. I am sure this is not for everyone, I totally understand.

I get it, I really do. I've been tempted myself, but like others have said, the cost of rubber is just too high for a few seconds worth of thrill.

Besides, everything about a modern car, from the tires, to the suspension, to the "nannies" are all designed to keep you from losing traction, which really is a good thing. The reason muscle cars back in the day could burn out so easily was because they didn't have the chassis or the tires that could put the power to the ground.
