Hi All,

I want to change the OEM oil cooler on my UK 2019 Bullitt, due to the risk of them failing and taking the engine with them.

It looks like a straight forward job but I was just wondering if anyone has any recommendations or advise, on the installation, before I go ahead with it?

The kit i am looking at it is Mishimoto one: https://www.mishimoto.co.uk/ford-mustang-gt-oil-cooler-kit-2018.html

Cheers

Is there a big risk of the oil cooler failing? They're pretty simple designs that are integrated into the oil filter housing, and I don't think I've heard of a single failure in the 7+ years that I've had my S550.

I watched the Mishimoto install video for the 2018+, and it's super well documented and very straightforward. Maybe it's a little bit of a pain to do, but there don't seem to be any "gotchas". While I was in there, I'd replace the thermostat, remove the sound tube, and I'd probably be looking for a kit that had an oil filter relocation option so I didn't have to spill oil all over the damn place every time I changed the filter.

I'd personally be more inclined to go with something like this, as it has both the external oil cooler and an oil filter relocation kit, but that's just me.

you really need to look at this thread and then measure your oil temperatures before doing anything if only because we need to see what they actually run stock

RHD oil coolers have history of failing, also our cooler isn't mounted to the oil filter, ours is down by the left hand (sitting in the car facing forward) engine mount

Fortunately for you guys in the states, as far as i know, you have a slightly different OEM cooler design than we do in the UK. There has been a decent number of pre facelift and some, but not as many, facelift S550s that have seen oil cooler failure. I am lead to believe it is to do with the material that separates the oil and coolant failing and allowing oil to be pumped out of the engine and into the cooling system, resulting in main bearing failure.

The installation itself doesn't look too bad, I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks.

That is good to hear that there isnt any snags that might get in the way of completing the job.

Cheers

Yeah I have read through the thread and it was interesting. I would be all for doing a cooler delete but i plan on going charged in the future. So to me this is more preventative maintenance.

I will for sure do some before and afters on oil temps and post the results on my build thread.

What a weird thing for Ford to do. I mean, with the steering shaft moved to the RH side of the engine, why change the design? It's not like you'd need more space on the LH side, and the stacked cooler seems to do just fine. Even in the middle of the summer, in traffic, when it's 100 degrees, I rarely see oil temps over 205 degrees.

Still, I'd be looking to relocate that oil filter. Bonus if you can find a double filter adapter, so you can run a second filter. More oil, more filtration.

remember you have a 5yr powertrain warranty so dont worry about it til near the end of yr5, if you haven't hit that calendar point of course.

there isn't the space for the RHD steering rack, oil filter and oil cooler plate and i think the PS pump? so we lose the cooler from there and it gets punted to the other side of the engine. I would imagine we'd also be stuffed for putting any kind of sandwich plate there so that relocation kit you linked to would be mighty fine.

Unless y'all have a traditional power steering system with an engine belt driven pump, which would be a big change, the S550 uses an electrically driven pump. Given that the oil filter is on the LH side of the Coyote, which is the same side that the steering shaft is on for US LHD vehicles, they're removing things from the LH side, not adding them. Not sure how that could impact the space available on the LH side.

tbh maybe i've picked folks up wrong but Ford didn't change the oil cooler on RHD vehicles for the giggles of it.

You have a better chance of seeing God than your oil cooler "failing"

possibly but the odds of seeing God are significantly higher if you own and drive a RHD Mustang versus a LHD Mustang
