Oil Consumption Calcutor

Hey Guys,

Quick question about the oil consumption calculator in the dash. I have a 2018 GT PP1, with 15k miles on it. I last had an oil change on 12/5/20, and it's now 2/2/21... about 2 months later... my car is reporting me at 78% remaining oil. I've heard before that this thing is automated and it takes 2% off a week, regardless of how the car is consuming oil... is that true? If that's the case... mine is till pretty ahead of that.

I can obviously pull the dip stick and see where it's really appearing to be at.... but do you guys know the specifics on how the car calculates the remaining oil and do you think I should be worried? My car has a horrible version of the 2k rattle, and a mild BBQ tick... otherwise it runs fine.

It's not showing how much oil you have left, but the remaining life of the oil. Your car could be completely out of oil, or have 5 quarts too many and the amount of life wouldn't change. You use this info to determine when you need an oil change.

It do not monitor oil consumption but rather “life”
It’s BS, many factors such as rpm’s, oil temperature, etc, and to a certain degree time, are used for calculation. It’s a pretty sophisticated system

I've verified during winter storage that the OLM will go down ~2% a week, even if the engine is never started. That's because Ford wants you to change the oil at least once a year, ever if the engine never runs. 100%/52 weeks per year = 1.92% per week.

I'm assuming your OLM was at 100% on 12/2/20, and if so then it would have went down 2%/week x 4 weeks = 16% from just sitting without driving. But if you also drove between those dates, then the OLM would also take some oil life % off for the driving.

100% - 16% = 84% oil life remaining. You have 78% showing, so apparently the other 6% was from driving. How many miles did you drive between 12/5/20 and 2/2/21 ?

Wow! Really good info. Yeah it was reset to 100% after the oil change. The car has gone about 1,500 miles in that time. It has also done a couple canyon runs with some pretty spirited driving in that time as well.

Looks normal/OK to me. Nothing to worry about IMO.

I pulled the dip stick this morning. About 1,600 miles and 2 months since the last oil change. Do you guys think this is a decent reading? Based on my own research I’m hopeful it’s pretty good.

Hard to say, but looks about 1/2 way between the two holes? Also depends on where the oil level was right after the oil change (the baseline level), and if checked with the car in the same exact spot the exact same way.

Its had 2 or 3 canyon runs which is about 200 or so miles of pretty spirited driving on it.. and I normally get on it pretty hard and do about two or three hard 0-60 runs every time I drive it.
