There's lots of downsides. Whether they apply to your situation or not is a different question.

The NAV not working when you need it could be real, like if there's a crash/emergency. Your phone could stop connecting, music stop playing, texts and calls stop working through SYNC.

If you don't care about any of that, forget it.

But....

It's pretty easy to update.

What version of Sync do you have in your car and which software revision is it on?

Well, the first part of that question is whether you have Sync1 (small 4" screen) or Sync3 (larger 8" screen).

Here's a video for Sync3.

8 in.sync version is 3.3 18351.checked and that's latest so must have had it on auto updates, ori set it up for that just now and when I went to scan for latest updates 5 minutes later it didn't find any updates and when I went to about sync it showed the latest in my current version.so guess I'm good.thanks.hope I don't any more requests to update

Odd... There's 3.4.22251 out that can be flashed using Syn3 Updater.

I'm still on 22110 cuz 22251 offers no benefits to me.

You can disable automatic updates somewhere in Sync settings. I have mine disabled too.

For me the Wifi updates never worked. Only this helped, using a USB stick. Its a little techy but it can be done.

I recommend doing it, sync has gotten better since my car was new with the regular updates. I use a USB stick to do it though.

Agree there - my 2018 also never updated over my WiFi connection… even when leaving the car run… Not sure why it doesn’t, as I thought that would be the way it worked.

I also have never updated my SYNC (yet) either, so it’s still on whatever version it was when the car was new. I’ve not had a single issue connecting my iPhone to it either, streaming via BT, or any other functionality issues - even when SYNC is an older version.

Has ANYONE ever been able to update SYNC over WiFi?

You can in the newer versions, but I believe it's bugged in the older ones so it's not surprising it doesn't work for you

I have the 4in in my 2022 and it wouldn’t update over Wi-Fi. I used a USB stick, drove around for 10-15 minutes while it updated via USB and it was done. Pretty easy, I’ll just do it that way going forward.

I drive a 2020 GT Premium and my SYNC 3 got out of date. As a result of that my GPS/NAV wasn't working and I would get the GPS with a red circle/slash symbol on my home and NAV screens. I downloaded the SYNC 3 update to a USB drive and did the update and that resolved my problem. I think it's in your best interest to keep everything up to date so as to avoid quirky problems. I mean, you paid for the technology in your car why not keep it up to date so you can use what you are paying/paid for...
