Three years ago I bought an R out of California, shipped it to Nebraska. I saw on the carfax report that the engine was replaced and to me that was a good thing. What I didn't know at the time was that it was replaced with a Gen II engine. I finally took off the head cover and took a pic of the serial number. Correct me if I am wrong but "KA 555" is a Gen II engine? I need to look again and see what mileage the engine was replaced, my car has total 25k miles and it might have been replaced right before I bought it.
Not that I want to sell this car but some day I do I hope the newer engine helps the price.

The order of operations for me is:

1st place: 2020 non engine swap
2nd place: 2019 non engine swap
3rd place: engine swapped 2016-18
4th place: non swapped 2016-18

I know this might not be popular, but I would take an engine swap over a 2016-18. The differences seem pretty robust. I think most people don't see the engine swap as a total negative ...

It's quite funny how the mentality on this topic has shifted over the years. I forgot the timeframe of the shift, but there was a period of time when the thought of an engine replacement and a non-numbers matching car was incomprehensible. A death sentence. Then the lure of the "Gen II" engine started to emerge, everything started shifiting the other direction - within our same little group here. All of a sudden a new replacement engine was OK and borderline desired. Hell, people on here were downright exploring how to get a replacement engine. Quite interesting to watch.

Good point Galaxy, to me numbers matching is a mute point but prefer the Gen II engine. I guess the true "collector" guys think matching is important if it is a low miles and will fit in that bucket of "low-miles collector car that sits in a storage garage 24-7". Not me.....

I missed the transformation so thanks for this little piece of history. When I learned about the engine swap and the saw it in the Carfax I thought how thankful I am to some previous owner who probably also was part of these forums and took advantage of the knowledge at the time to get a new engine in her

Perception on things like this changes over time for sure, but we really won’t know how this debate will shake out for a loooooong time. If you look back at now classics crossing the auction block, you’ll often see the highest values ascribed to nuances no one would have expected at the time. That said, if a replacement was down by Ford under warranty with an OEM part that is proven to be better / stronger / more reliable (open for debate, I know!) then I would imagine most buyers would appreciate that and not view it as a negative. Wrapper cars sitting in a museum, different story, but if you’re actually enjoying it as you should, I think high odds on a replacement being a good thing from a value perspective.

That and the fact that someone's going to have to plunk down 25k to replace it out of pocket charges alot of attitudes. I know it keeps me away from shopping anything other than a 19 or 20.
