I have a '17 GT Performance Pack and I've had transmission issues from day 1.
I have pronounced gear whine in all gears. It's quite loud. There is a kind of grainy, scratchy (almost like a chain) noise constantly in all gears, particularly present between 3000-4000 RPM, and loudest in third. It is on top of the engine noise, sort of sounds like it's coming from the center dash area, but it's basically just present, not localized to any area. Shifting sounds frequently louder than normal and very clacky, with lots of chatter. You can also feel the transmission unload sometimes. It seems to just… release almost when decelerating sometimes, it feels like it shifts forward a bit and feels loose, and is accompanied by clacky mechanical sounds. Sometimes pressing in the clutch makes a mechanical noise (like throw out bearing noise) both on depression and release. Also, if I go into gear at a low RPM, my transmission sounds similar to when a semi truck goes into gear. It's quieter than a semi obviously, but a very similar sound, that low, straining, somewhat grinding sound.
There's also the GT PP differential thud.
None of these noises change with anything electrical, so AC, radio, etc don't affect the noises, other than to partially mask them.
I am sad that my first post is about this.
I originally called my salesperson the first night I had the car. I noticed the whine and some of the other noises. We set up for me to come in on the weekend to get it in for service and drive with a tech. I get there on Sat morning, and no one had any idea that I was coming in. There were no techs on site that day, and there wouldn't be any techs til Monday afternoon, so I drove the car back home. Took it into Ford a few days later but their techs weren't there i for me to drive around with them (even though I had ascertained when I scheduled the appointment that techs were going to be in at that time), so I left the car with the dealership. I was expecting them to come back with, "What noises? All this whining and other sounds are normal." And sure enough, the techs said they couldn't identify anything.
Had to wait a couple weeks for work reasons before I was able to come back in, but I came in a couple days ago and drove with a manager and pointed everything out, which he heard. We then took out another GT PP, and it exhibited absolutely none of my sounds. Sounded quiet in the cabin (other than the expected engine and exhaust noise), no whine, no weird grainy sound, no straining, no suddenly unloading and becoming loose, no clacky chatter.
I feel good that the service manager heard the noises, and I come back the next day to drop off the car. We write it up, and when he goes to enter the claim in the system, a warning comes up that says "the vehicle has a query request on it". We check out the Ford page, but there is no further info. My service manager had no idea why that showed up or what it meant, but said that he had never seen that message before. So that's weird.
The dealership calls at the end of the day and say that they called the Ford engineers and are waiting for a call back. Today, a day later, I get a call from my service manager that they talked to the engineers, told the engineers that my car had all these noises and that the other GT PP exhibited none, and the engineer said that nope, both vehicles are the same, it all sounds normal, and that Ford will not authorize any further work on my car. My service manager said all of my issues were coming from my transmission, but they can't do anything, not even explore it further unless Ford authorizes them to do more work.
My guess is that any dealer I take it to will also refuse, if now there is a note about my VIN to not help on transmission issues.
This car has exhibited this noise since the day I picked it up at 35 miles. It is a brand new car that costs over $40,000, has clear mechanical issues related to the transmission, and Ford (corporate, not the dealership) is telling me that I should deal with it and shut up basically, and that there is nothing wrong. I have owned multiple BMWs, and if there's something wrong with a brand new car, they don't give you the run around. They fix the problem. I had that same type of good experience with Mazda as well. Mazda, same as BMW, identified and fixed my issue, they didn't pretend that my clearly abnormal noises were noises. And that car cost half of my Mustang! I am appalled that this is how Ford treats new customers of brand new cars. I had actually been really excited to get an American car, and had been telling people (pre-purchase) how nice Ford's new lineup is. Now I just feel depressed every time I think about the car, and obviously driving it and hearing the noises just make things worse.
I'd really like Ford to do right here, and address the issues with the car. I drove multiple other brand new GT Performance Packs when I was shopping, as well as the one the other day at the dealership, and they all sound normal; that is - unlike my car. They all sound like each other. Mine is super noisy and has mechanical issues, but Ford says both those cars working quietly and my car that's noisy and problematic are both normal, which just isn't the case. As my service manager said, all of my issues are from the transmission.
Please help me here, Ford.
