Can someone shed light why EB manual delivers better mpg than auto (35 v 28?) but vice versa with GT where manual combined is 20mpg but auto is 23. It's quite significant differences but I and dealer has no idea why this is the case. Cheers.

Taking a bit of a stab but I would imagine if those figures are a true representation, I would put it down to the turbo engine being more receptive to a map fully exploiting the characteristics of the auto box.

But would that not mean EB mpg would be better with auto? Auto is 20% worse mpg on EB but 10%+ better on V8?!

In the EU tests, an auto is put in drive and allowed to change gear where it thinks best, where as a manual has to have its gears changed at pre-determined points. These points suit some cars better than others, and have to work for very low powered cars which in real life are driven very differently. Therefore you cant compare the official figures of one car to another and expect real life to be just a fixed percentage of the EU figure.

As Auto boxes are rather more efficient than they used to be i would expect the actual economy to be very similar between auto and manual on each engine.

My EB auto convertible has now done 2k miles, and is averaging about 28mpg. It is a mix of urban and Ionger drives; it looks like cruising at 70 gives around 34 but drops quickly at higher speeds. I presume the fact that Ford have never given the Cd aerodynamic figures on might give a clue as to why...

Ford did some work to get the CO2 down to 225 but never reduced the price in line with it. I think the eb manual should be a bit better, but I am happy as I chose the auto for convenience as I spend a lot of time in slow traffic.

I am taking it to Germany in August so will be doing some genuine high speed cruising then...
