Going to pull the trigger on an MGW, can’t decide between standard or x-spec, and either standard height or low profile.. already have a weighted raceseng shift knob

I've got the low profile x-spec in mine and love it. The throw is very short and takes some getting used to. I did plenty of 2nd to 5th shifts before figuring out that I need to just let the shifter do the work going to 3rd instead of trying to push it over there myself. I'm reusing the stock knob, so I'm not sure what a weighted one would do for the feel, but you definitely get a lot more transmission feel from the new shifter.

I did have some issues with how low the shifter sat when I first installed it. The shift knob was so low that I kept pinching my fingers between the knob and bezel. This was remedied when I swapped out the stock trans mount with a Boomba mount.

Yea I’ve always felt like money shifting was a lot more possible with short shifters too

That would be too. With the MGW, any shift going into 3rd or 4th, you just have to push forward or pull back, no side to side pressure. The shifter will put you in the correct gear.

Yea I think with how tall my shift knob is it wouldn’t be too bad getting the low profile

MGW X-spec looks awesome! Who’s the supplier of the shifter ball?

MGW is top quality - been around since the original 5.0 days during the Fox/SN95/S197 eras.

Knob(s) by Gene Zapsky @ https://www.flameball.com
Edit: be sure to specify thread size/pitch (3/8x16) and that you need at least 1" of threads if you don't want to use a jam nut. Gene has had a message on his site about health issues since last year, but I emailed him and he was able to get mine done.

Call up MGW. When I called them, Mr. Ciamillo himself answered and gave his recommendation based on my use case. Super nice and they make fantastic products.
Unless you have already used an MGW, you won't believe how much better it is than the stock shifter.

MGW X-spec standard with a flatstick and gripper ball is just perfect IMO.

I've just got the standard MGW shifter and an MGW ball. I actually like a longer throw, some of these short shifters are way too short for my taste. This shifter is still shorter throw than stock, but not so short I can't tell gear I'm in. The biggest improvement is simply the way the shifter feels and operates. No mushy shifts, it cured my occasional 1-2 upshift lockout, i'm super happy with it.
