If the blowfish bracket improves things or reduces the delay between the noise and the shift it's possible that the transmission is moving relative to the chassis during this event. I can feel the thunk and thought it was some kind of weight transfer going on. Has anyone tried the blowfish bracket and the whiteline transmission mount insert together and noticed any improvement or change?

The turbo-4's have the thud too. No torsen available in the Ecoboost either. So its not isolated to the differential. And say we don't 'accept mediocrity'. For there to be some recall down the road there probably needs to be a failure rate for Ford to asses and a subsequent petition from owners. I remember the 3000GT/Stealth turbo community did this 15 years back regarding their haldex transfer cases. But they were also leaking fluid and then seizing the drive wheels causing accidents. They were able to get a recall from the NHSTA.

The NHSTA has already dropped the investigation into the MT82 once:

Ford has iron out most of those rough spots over the last few iterations of this transmission. I remember when Getrag used to mean something prior to all of the Chinese outsourcing of parts and I'd be surprised if this box of pots and pans survived another generation. But noises and clunks aren't enough for Ford to give a shit. They knew about them long before they put it in the S550.

I drove a 2016 base model GT without the performance package today and could not recreate the issue. It was a loaner with < 10 miles on it. This leaves me curious as to what differences could be causing this. I'm going to try to drive another new performance package model and see if I can recreate the issue there. The severity of the thunk / movement may differ between cars and break in period.

The more miles you put on car the loauder it gets... I have driven one with 8 miles with NO THUD at all... Then one with 18 miles and it was very noticeable ...
Every car is different...
For me it's not so much the thud as is the clunky noise that feels like the carrier bearing on driveshaft is loose, but it not?
Someone said the Torsen Rearend may be the problem.. I am guessing that would be true...
Lots of people have replaced Shifter, driveline to one piece and still has the noise...
I have got my car back from deatler and will be happy with it till it gets a bulletin or breaks... Nothing the audio can't take care of..
And if youre going to say we should not put up with it, I agree..
Just tired of it being at the dealer...
Runs fine!

It's not the transmission or else all cars would have the issue instead of it being relegated to PP cars, it's something with the torsen diff.
It is 100% NOT relegated to PP cars. Just saying.

My GT Premium (non-PP) with the 3.55 gears has had the same thud going on since I bought it back in February. I currently have about 15k miles on it and I'd wager to say it's about the same as it's always been (still on stock tranny fluid).

It sounds like there may be different intensities of the thud between cars/owners but of course that could also simply be how each person perceives it. Mine doesn't really bother me all that much but it's definitely enough to be noticeable.

I've also heard about the same thud from countless other non-PP cars (and now it sounds like Eco's are getting it too). There is no doubt this is connected to the transmission/synchro's.

The thud is the back lash in the diff.
When changing gear the lash is being taken up causing the teeth to bang against each other.
Even automatics can get this thud when I apply the throttle too harshly at low speeds.

As long as we're all talking about the same thud, I test drove two non PP cars and neither had the issue, both had more than 100 miles on the ODO. It's not the weird lash-clunk from light on/off throttle in 6th gear or whatever.

In my car I can get this to occur while sitting still, it's not quite as pronounced.

I never get a thud from drivetrain lash.

I sometimes have this THUD sound but only from switching for 1st to 2nd. I haven't heard it in any other gears. I've also noticed it tends to happen in the first few minutes of driving and seems to go away after that. It's not very loud in mine, though.

Mine only does it when in neutral at a red light and then going into first gear. That's when i hear it all the time.

You guys that only get it in 1st or from 1-2 should count your stars. You could just take off in 2nd most/many times and avoid it altogether. Mine does it through 4th. You can feel it, it is loud as hell and I'm probably going to sell the car before long because of it.

Take that back, I'll have to trade it for another Ford because I can only imagine trying to explain to a potential buyer (or dealer) "Yeah, Ford says it's normal that the tranny sounds and feels like its about to fall out every shift".

I absolutely love everything else about the car, but 98% of my driving is in town with lots of shifting and that sound simply ruins it for me. This is my 11th manual car, haven't had an auto in over 25 years and never heard anything like this.

I've already been to the dealer. The service guy rode with me, heard it and said "that's not normal" but he'd check with Ford. Lo and behold next day they called me and said Ford told them to drive another one and see if it does it, the guy did and said that one did it also and therefore it's normal. I didn't notice it on the three I drove prior to ordering mine but I also didn't notice it driving mine home. I can't imagine how that happened.

I never thought I'd say this but I may get an auto. Not too impressed with the 6R80 though. Maybe an 8-spd in '17?

Yeah, I've been taking off in second a lot now. I drive a very short distance to work and it's mostly back roads so not much shifting. I refuse to believe this is "normal". I'm going to ford this weekend for another reason but will definitely ask a tech out here what their thoughts are and take them for a drive. I'll report back on that.
