The temperature is dropping here in the North East and I have been hearing a screech when I start the car. If I press in the clutch pedal it stops.
Then when I release the clutch pedal it makes the noise again. The screech stops after the car get warm. Any ideas?

Thanks

Take it to the dealership right away. I was going to say throw out bearing, but that should only have an issue when the clutch pedal is depressed. If you have the transmission in neutral and the clutch pedal is released, the input shaft on the transmission is turning. The input shaft will not be powered by the engine if the clutch pedal is depressed. It could be a transmission problem related to the input shaft, I suppose. It doesn't seem likely to me, though.

Possibly the throw out bearing is somehow dragging against the clutch when it shouldn't be. Problem with the master cylinder or something. I'm not sure how any of the issues I've mentioned would have anything to do with cold temperatures, though. Unless there's water in your brake fluid (I seriously doubt it).

Obviously, the first thing i'd suspect would be a belt.

open up the hood when it's making the noise, see if you can tell if its coming from the front of the engine or the back.

How is the clutch changing a belt? I do agree that belts and pulleys tend to squeal on startup, but he said depressing the clutch made it stop.

I thought exactly the same thing, just reading the title. Cold screech? It's a belt. :like: Ok, yeah, clutch changes it... that's something else. In the immortal words of Col. Rhodes (in Iron Man): "...I think you should lead with that next time."

Throwout bearing ... pilot bearing are the usual suspects.
But shouldn't the symptom be reversed if it's one of those? The pilot and throw out bearings should both be unloaded when the clutch pedal is released, correct?

You would think. I had a howling pilot bearing on another Ford that went away when the clutch was depressed.

I would check the play on the belts first

Yep sounds clutch related (throw-out bearing). I would turn it on pop the hood and try to locate the location of the noise. Then spray some belt dressing just to double check - I doubt its the belt but doesn't hurt to check. If the sound is in the back of the engine you will know its most likely the throw-out bearing.
