Hey Guys,

I have a 2018 GT PP1 with the MT-82. I bought this car used with 7k miles on it. I’ve had the car for 6 months and it only has 10k miles on it. (I have a 2019 FiST as a second car so the GT isn’t on the road every day).

I have 3 annoying things with this car. I have the Coyote Tick, I have the 2k rattle, and the MT-82 sucks. I can drive the car at about 60% and it shifts fine and the car is smooth... anything more and that trans is not up for it... at least on my car. Under heavy load it’s inconsistent and occasionally locks me out of gear.

Other than that I love the car... Do you think I’m better off just paying off the rest of my loan and then sell it to somewhere like CarMax? Then I would drive FiST for awhile and save some money. I could later on get a 2020 GT with the 10 speed auto instead.

The tick and the 2k rattle I understand can still happen on any GT... but those don’t bug me too much. The MT-82 is really what drives me crazy.

What would you guys do? Any advice is appreciated!

Won’t comment on your cars mechanical problems as I’m sure others with more knowledge will. But, as far as selling you are going to be far better off doing it on your own. Carmax will not offer any better than wholesale value. You can get a better idea of its wholesale value by getting a no obligation offer from Vroom or Carvana. Depending on your state there could be some savings on taxes by trading. In NC the sales tax is based off of the trade difference if there is one, not the vehicle purchase price. Good luck

The tick, is the cam timing being adjusted on the fly, easiest way to describe it. It is not lifters, it is just an aluminum block, & OHCed motor. Thay make different sounds than an iron block. Aluminum does not absorb or deaden sound like the iron. They make different sounds, rest easy my friend you have an ass kicking car...

The shifting, I bet your problem is from 2nd too 5th and missing 3rd. That is all about getting use to how use the stick.

@ first I was trying to find the path from 2nd to 3rd, would miss it. Then I discovered, just pushing the stick forward coming out of 2nd it went right in 3rd, pull straight back to 4th. Then 5th, put some pressure on the stick to the right, slips into 5th pull straight back into high gear.
In other words, do not put pressure on the stick trying coming out of second gear, to find the gate for 3rd gear.

I would just go beat the snot out of the GT for a few drives. It’ll make you feel better and realize it’s not going to blow up. Plus it’s still under warranty.

As far as the shifting issue, you could change the fluid and see if that helps and also look at an aftermarket shifter if you’re interested in modding. Between those two it seems to fix a lot of MT-82 woes.

All these people bitching about the mt-82 it's my guess most just don't know how to drive a manual!! I've been driving one my entire life I'm 57. There is nothing wrong with this transmission. Mine is perfect. Daddy should have taught you to drive a manual.

Correct,

Dumping in some goop, changing the shifter, ain't going to solve anything. I love the close ratio of the box, so fun!

Agree with changing the fluid and shifter . I have installed a few mgw shifters in clients cars , and my own . Big difference .

I went with the Speeda 35lbs clutch spring. And while it does help. You just have to drive the car and get used to it. No replacement for seat time.

Sell your car to Carmax, AutoNation, Carvana, etc is almost never a good financial decision.
If you decide to sell it, it's well worth the time and effort to do it yourself.
I believe we're entering an odd period for car sales, both new and used.
Right now, with the glut of new cars sitting on lots it's probably a buyers market for new and used cars. So, it's likely going to be difficult to get premium value for your used car. Depending on how long this shutdown lasts there may be a time when new cars are in short supply. That should boost the price of used cars. So, you might want to consider those ideas when making the decision to keep or sell.

I think you would have a hard time selling it yourself in the current environment. I have sold a few cars to CarMax. The prices I got were fair wholesale value. I check what a car is worth on CarGurus before selling. You will lose a few thousand dollars, but sometimes it's worth the hassle. Given the inventory of unsold Mustangs and the usual high depreciation, you are going to take a hit regardless of how or when you sell it.

Buddy, the tick is normal. I had it for all 160k+ miles of my 2012 and beat the piss out of it the whole time. Never had any issues

LOL what else would one expect a salesmen say. And if the goop, and shifter, don't fix it. We have a new tranny, we'll pop in and cut the labor a huge 10%

Thats funny..:cwl:

Sorry not a salesman , but after 30 plus years of working on this crap you can call it what you want . The stock shifter is like playing with a noodle . Most aftermarket shifters go away from a body mount to a Trans mount eliminating the slop .

MGW shifter, fluid change, clutch spring removal all make the MT-82 a lot more bearable. still not great though. i'm a believer in a Calimer trans, but then you're spending even more money. i heard they fixed most of the issues with the MT-82 for the 2018+ cars though so maybe a shifter is all you need

I'm sorry but I'm not quite going to fit your stereotype. I don't have a TON of experience with manuals, but I have a 2019 Fiesta ST with a manual and I have driven a Mini Cooper with a manual as well. I'm 30 years old and have paid for this car and my FiST.... not something given to me by Mom or Dad and I had to teach myself how to drive a manual. This GT is my 3rd car with a manual. I understand comparing the MT-82 to the manual transmission in my FiST or the Mini Cooper isn't fair. Both of those cars have about 200 HP and the Mustang has way more than double that as you know. It's not going to shift the same and every car acts differently anyway.

I just don't think the MT-82 is that good of a transmission, to me it's very inconsistent when driving it hard. If I'm just driving it around the streets running around the speed limit, there's no issues... ever. I'm just talking about when you're really driving it hard, that's when I see weak points. Now listen, I did buy this car used with 7,000 miles on it. When we get out of this pandemic, I would LOVE to go test drive a 2020 GT that's brand new with the MT-82 to see if it would act different than my car.

I will also tell the last 2 days, I have tried to change up my technique a little when driving it hard... based off some advice I had read in other forum threads and I've really enjoyed myself. Enough to the point where this car is absolutely going no where, I'm hanging onto it as is. So I'm happy to report I'm feeling a lot better about things... way better than when I created this thread.
