Logging data

I am looking for the best way to log data. Hardware and software recommendations and any other information would be appreciated. I have an iPhone, Harry's Track Timer, an nGauge (Lund), and a Surface Pro. I also have the 2 OBD adapters below.

When logging is everything the OBD has to offer streaming or do you have to request certain parameters? Is there software that could run on the Surface and capture via the USB/Serial connection? Is there a different adapter that I should purchase? Do I need a hardware-based device just for this purpose? I am hoping for minimal investment over what I already have if that helps with any suggestions

I have a GoPro 7 and thought I would maybe use RaceRender to tie the data to the video. I have seen that suggested elsewhere.

I run the OBDLink® LX Bluetooth and a Garmin Virb Ulta 30 and it work well.
So, I dont use middleware.

Would the Aim Solo DL do everything in one package? I don't want to spend that much any more than I would use it, but if it would handle all the data maybe it would be worth it?

One thing I would like to see is gear position. It is a manual transmission. Is that outside the scope of the OBD?

Don't know about the 'best' way, but I'm happy with RaceChrono Pro (Android) + BT OBD module.
My RaceChrono OBD settings:
Fast channels: Engine RPM, Speed, Throttle position;
Slow channels: Air temp, Airflow rate, Coolant temp, Engine oil temp, intake temp.

Even though I'm using the phone's GPS unit, lap times are accurate to 0.1 seconds compared to the track box.

It works with my GoPro7 as well.
Note: if you want to play around in RaceRender, you'll have to sync the streams manually. (The view of the RPM digit gauge is ideal for syncing).

Right, so that is a good question. I can take my TonWon OBD2 and connect to OBD Fusion and record Speed and RPM. It is only capturing about 2 event per second which is not fast. Fundamentally that is the type of the thing I want to do, capture data. I would also like to capture other information such as throttle position, gear (if that is possible) that does not seem to be available from within that app.

Harry's Track Timer does not seem to provide the data which may be as a result of something I am not doing correctly. I suspect that a hardwired connection to the OBD2 port would be faster and so if there is software that can run on a Windows device and allow me to select available parameters that would be an option. It is my understanding that given the right connector there is other information available through the OBD2 port using CAN.

I am hoping to get insight as to what I need from a hardware and software perspective.

I'm happy with RaceChrono Pro

I might give this a try. They just updated for GoPro 7 and I ordered the OBDLink MX+ adapter.

I log things in a slightly more complicated way because of the equipment I have on hand. This is how I do it.

* Primary phone hooked up to OBDLink MX bluetooth adapter to record car telemetry (RPM, Throttle Position, Any other sensors I can pull from the OBDII port), output to a .csv file.
* Secondary phone (old and otherwise unused) hooked up to an external BT GPS adapter (Qstarz BT-Q818XT) recording my lap times and GPS position at 10hz, output to a .csv file.
* GoPro Hero 5 Black recording video facing forward.
* GoPro Hero 4 Black recording video facing behind me and hooked up to an external mic mounted to my rear license plate frame.

I import all 4 of those into RaceRender 3 on my PC to create the final video. It's more complicated than more expensive setups but the Hero4, second phone, and external GPS were already on hand from other things I did before I ever even tracked my car so all I really invested in this setup is RaceRender, external mic, and the OBDLink MX. It's a lot to coordinate and a lot of work but I love the outcome. Here's a video where I got MOST of it synced up properly. It's still a little off because I got lazy but this will give you a rough idea.

The Waylens Horizon looks interesting with video & data, but I hear that it's track data functionality is not up to snuff.

The Aim Solo stuff would be tempting at $100-200 less. An integrated system from a Pro data acquisition company. But a phone based package is so much cheaper.

The app the comes with the OBDLink MX. It's just called "OBDLink".

The RaceCapture plugs into and is powered by the OBD port

you can download the HD video later on.
RaceCapture has there own track software to, it will run on Apple or Android, SoloStorm only runs on Android
I haven't use the RaceCapture app so I can't comment on that
Used Harry's for years, but SoloStorm is heads and tails above that app
