So while I've been to the track a couple times, I kind of a n00b in terms of how people record their fun there. I've seen some people using apps on their phones that collect telemetry data during their runs (everything from G forces to brake and gas pedal inputs to speed to gear position), and I think they have some kind of bluetooth device that connects to their car to give them that data.

Can anyone point to me to where I can get one of those devices? And what kinda app would work best with them for an Android phone?

Thanks in advance.

Although I've never tracked my car, I use the Torque app for Android. It will read everything about your vehicle via Bluetooth adapter. There's a plugin you can add called 'Track Recorder' that will allow you to overlay a video with your car's OBD2 data (speed, rpm, boost, accelerometers, etc).

I believe the app is $5 but I can't remember.

The adapter you would want is something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Version-Bluetooth-Diagnostic-Interface-Scanner/dp/B008UR7J6I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426497472&sr=8-2&keywords=ELM+327+Bluetooth+OBDII+OBD2+Diagnostic+Scanner

It goes in the OBD II diagnostics port. And yes, its in the driver's side footwell. Stick your head down there and you'll see it easy enough.

I got the fancy reader, but haven't taken it out anywhere fun yet.

One other question: Is there any drawback to leaving one of these OBDII adapters plugged in all the time? I'm guessing the only potential issue is power draw, which is probably very, very low.

Very popular with Youtube channels.

Eeentursting... I had found this with some google searching:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque&hl=en

The graphical overlay of the telemetry data doesn't seem as visually pleasing on the one I found compared to the one you linked... But I like that it will also give me OBDII info.

What exactly is the difference between something like this and some of the cheaper ones? Other than maybe quality.

I figured these were just like HDMI cables -- digital conduits that all carry the exact same information.

build/component quality for one, auto-off so it won't drain the battery, but mostly how many data points it can cycle per second. At least as I understand it.

And yes, Torque Pro is what I use for monitoring data. Good logging, some decent plugins. I just wish it had cloud backup of the data.

I heard that cloud compatibility is in the works for a future update.

Resurrecting a somewhat old thread, but was wondering if anyone had input on the following products:

First, I currently have Harry's Lap Timer (Grand Prix edition), but use only the basic functionality. I was thinking of adding an OBD reader that would work with the Lap Timer as well as a decent iPhone app to use as an OBD interface.

So far, it looks like the GoPoint BT1 is a decent scanner that is recommended both by Harry's and by an app called "Dash Command" (which looks pretty full featured).

GoPoint BT1: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0061XSX0O/
Dash Command: http://www.palmerperformance.com/products/dashcommand/index.php

Curious if anyone has used either of these or has any recommendations.
