I don't think it's any coincidence that the pics showing black wheels on a black car look better.

I think that there are a lot of factors that affect how good they look (to me). Wheels size, style, finish (gloss/flat/satin), the type of car they are on and its color all affect how much I like/dislike the look.

I think in some combinations of the above they look pretty decent, but if I have a choice, I will probably almost always opt for something besides black.
Exactly. Its not one size fits all. Like most things it depends on a bunch of factors. To generalize and say they are terrible and that they are copouts is wrong.

There is no way my car with black wheels looks anything remotely close to this

It really depends on the wheel, I think if your going to go with black, they should be a slightly more open design, something that lets the rotors and brake calipers show through.

One thing to consider is that just about every race car since the dawn of time, Nascar, Indy, F1, GT1, 2 etc has used black wheels. One of the reason for this is that in the beginning the paint was lighter then chrome, and it also cut back on glare for the other drivers.
Motorcycle race wheels, also majority black, and even bicycle racing wheels, black.

So IMO the black wheel signifies performance and racing, it's no frills, all business, it's not blingy or showy like polished or chrome.

I think one of the reasons they got a bad wrap was because a lot of people who couldn't afford nicer wheels started taking the hub caps off of their steel wheels, and that image was born. All they were trying to do was too make their cars look like the majority of race cars, with black wheels.

Now, I prefer black, but I'm not against polished, gray, or any other color on someones car, that's the great thing about having a choice. :-)

Nice car. I agree that having some openings in the spokes helps. I don't like multi spoke in any color but especially black. The black 2015 wheels shown have too many spokes.

There is a youtube out there of a 93 vibrant red cobra with the oem turbine wheels painted black and a THIN red stripe (like a red whitewall) I think on the tires or wheels hard to tell which, that looks pretty sharp. I'm picturing something similar with yours, or at least red calipers. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: found it, check this color scheme out. It's missing it's center caps but you'll get the idea.

Black wheels are a generational fad. Just like matte paint on a car and building rat-rods. This too, shall pass, just like the mini-truck era did.

I wanna see the 20" wheels painted matte and gloss black. Think that could be interesting. Even maybe gunmetal

Pretty much dead on. I hate chrome but like polished and black wheels. I'm 43 y.o.

I also like how having black wheels pisses off the Baby Boomer crowd to no end whom are so enamored with chrome.

Chrome wheels are a generational thing, it will die out soon. ;)

I'm 49, and like nickel plated or polished magnesium or aluminum, then gunmetal/grey, black with colour or bright accents, white, black, orange, and chrome, then alternate colours in that order. ;-)

If you had of asked me six months ago if I liked black rims I would have said it is played out. This car looks perfect in bright colors with dark rims....

I like hyperblack wheels the best, however....Its the best of black, gray and chrome all mixed together. If it has a polished lip, even better.

I think black wheels can look good. But I am surprised that Ford is pushing them so much. They should be an option on the PP pack.

I have black lightweight forged alloys on my car. Not so clear pic.

That's the problem. Unless you are an experienced photographer or have perfect light having black wheels never show up very well.

The entire pic is not clear. Has nothing to do with the wheels. Btw, the pic is a transfer from a phone to computer-lousy pixels. I guess it depends on what you are looking for-wheels to stand out or wheels to compliment.

Excellent point. Black wheels are meant as complimentary and/or contrasting. Busy shiny chrome wheels stand out and draw your eye AWAY from the vehicle to the wheels themselves. Some of us want the attention drawn to the color/lines/design of the car instead. :)

There are very few black wheels that look good imo. I plan on going with Forgestar CF10s on my CO 15. I personally don't car for the ones on the PP car but they are a nice factory offering.

Black wheels are a personal choice and it also depends on the style of rims.

Sorry, but I really dislike the black wheels. So much so that if the car I wanted has them, if possible, I will ask dealer to replace them. Perhaps Ford will consider decision to offer other wheels as option from the factory.

I didn't really notice them at first, but as time went on, I began to like black wheels with certain designs and color contrasts with the lines of the car.

I had a takeoff set of the 19" luster nickel wheels painted glass black for my 2010 GT. I like the way it contrasts with sterling grey, along with the gloss black of the stripes.

On the new car, I am looking at Magnetic with the 50th anniversary appearance package but will NOT black wheel it. I like the color contrast of the grey with the chrome of the grille and luster nickel paint of the wheels. This wheel style looks nicer to me in a brighter color because of it's thin spoke style. Also, it is a reminder of the chrome of the original wheels.

I think I would like the PP wheels in something other than black, again because of the thin spoke design.
