I have not personally talked to someone who had failed OPGs on a 15 and up car, but of course I don't talk to everyone. Lets get some real data, please only poll with your personal experience, not a friend's car etc..

I kind of wanted to expand this to all S550 V8s but there may be some differences, maybe we can do another one with GTs.

Not yet, but I did have rods let go. The new engine is in, and so far so good.

Your prospects of getting any data, much less meaningful data, are pretty slim. Virtually all GT350 engines are still under warranty, and those that failed were removed by the dealership service department, wrapped in an invisibility cloak and shipped back to Ford. Very few engines were ever disassembled at the dealer, and even then, little or no information was provided to the owner.

A lot of people thought that OPG's were a problem, but it was just a passing meme and probably didn't mean much. For instance, one engine that didn't fail belongs to @honeybadger. He had an electrical problem and took his engine out to fix it. While he had it out he decided to upgrade the oil pump, and when he took the old one out, he discovered it was damaged. Further analysis showed that the pump damage was from metal fragments from a broken valve spring. The fragments had gone through the pump along the edge of the pump gear and chipped the gear a bit, but most of the damage was to the aluminum housing. If those fragments had gone through the center of the gear, it's likely that the gear would have shattered and his engine would have failed. In that case, he'd have gotten a new engine from Ford and we'd be none the wiser about the failure mode. There'd be suspicion that the oil pump failed, and it would be correct, but the root cause of the failure wasn't the pump, it was something else.

This may be the case for NA motors and partial failures but FI motors are not under warranty. Also a destroyed gear will mean zero oil pressure, Yes I would go to the dealer for repair but I sure as hell would know what it was.

Based on what I've seen in my own rebuild and through some exposure to the builders I've talked to and members I've helped, I don't think I can call out one specific OPG failure. There were a couple that had failed OPGs, but like @JAJ mentioned, can't say exclusively that was the problem.

Personally view a billet OPG/CS as cheap insurance for a motor going to get see a rough life, but not one of the big failure items.
