In rush hour traddic today I hit a reese hitch with the ball facing up. It hit something under my car hard. I won't be able to look under the car till late Friday, lucky I have no oil leaks. If there is damage is this covered under comp insurance or would it fall under collision?

Thanks

Comprehensive is for everything except collision so if it was still attached to a vehicle that you hit its collision if it was laying loose on the road it would be comprehensive.

It might have just hit the k-member. It could have dented a muffler or floor pan.

When you do get under it, do check the trans case for any damage,

If you can, download and study your policy. These are the statements in mine:

"Collision coverage pays for damage to your own automobile when it collides with another automobile or object. It also pays if your automobile overturns.

Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your automobile from causes such as fire, theft, vandalism, hail, and falling objects."

If it were my car, my policy, it would be collision.

Hopefully, any damage received is cosmetic only. :please:

I'll call my agent today, yes it was loose in the road. I had no choice but to run over it as it was bumper to bumper traffic. Running about 45 MPH so if I hit the brakes I would have cause a chain reaction wreck.

I was worried about it hitting the trans pan or rear diff. It was in the center of the road. No oil leaks so that is good news anyway.

It's collision since it was not flying through the air. It did get my exhaust, one tip is farther away from the bumper than the other. I'll get it on a rack today hopefully.

In my 03 Mach, I did hit a reese hitch that fell out of a truck and landed ball up. The front bumper was damaged, and covered under comprehensive. Good luck, I hope it is nothing other than cosmetic.

I would argue if possible to stay away from doing it thru insurance if you can

replacing parts yourself will be a ton cheaper than a higher insurance premium, sounds like it wouldnt be crazy expensive to fix it diy

I wonder if within the definition of collision is the act of a moving car, whether yours or someone else's.

For example your side mirror is knocked off because you drove too close to something - that would be collision.
If your parked car's mirror is hit by a passing car - that is also collision.
But if your parked car's mirror is knocked off by a vandal - that is comprehensive.

I was told if it was flying through the air and I hit it it is comp. If it hits the ground it is collision. Only way I could get insurance to pay and not take a hit is if I can find the person who lost it and go through his insurance.

Isn’t it nice….They found a way to make everyone pay for insurance they can’t really use. I love our country, but this is another thing that needs to be fixed.

Insurance companies own the country and therefore the citizens as well.
