Oh I'm getting raped by insurance here in metro Detroit, it's 400 a month. Clean record, good neighborhood too. Frustrating. These cars cant be that costly to repair can they? I'm sure there's many other factors, there must be.
Here's the main factor. Apparently it doesn't take much to total these cars.

I'm a licensed agent at one of the major carriers.

We can't see your price. But we can see your coverage and how long you've been with them. Every company reports to the DMV that you are covered since it is illegal to drive without insurance. It's public record. Just like when you get a loan and they pull your credit and can see every credit card, home loan, late payment etc.

But to the OP the reason why a lot of the rates are similar is that they are looking at the same thing to determine your rate. That accident if it happened like you say it did shouldn't even show up. There's got to be something else that is cuasing your rates to be high.

Insurance companies now use credit as a part of their pricing which I think is totally unfair but they do. Also it is your area and such so no one can tell you what you should be paying even if you have a clean driving record. I think the rate is usually higher on these cars because they can be squirmy when driven fast and subsequently probably get a lot of claims. Anyway you know the insurance industry is taking advantage but what choices do we as consumers have?

This car made my rate jump to $165 a month but my other auto choice I was debating, a small CUV, was going to be $126.

It's still vehicle statistics primarily. Unless your bulk insuring everything you own under one carrier or live in Nerfville it's going to be high.

I had a Corvette C6 that cost me $80 a month for full coverage, when I sold it and bought a GTO my monthly rate shot up to $180. When I screamed about it they told me it's the car. The GTO crashes more than a Corvette and is harder to fix.

Then there's the "single" tax which is where insurance is generally more expensive if you're single. But I'll pay that tax not to have some winey woman to pass all my decisions through.

Some States are weird. In California I paid $280/mth for minimum (lot of uninsured illegals & criminals, several friends had car's jacked in mall parking lot, one was stabbed in the process). Texas suburbs, full coverage 1 million personal injury but no rental coverage & 2,000 deductible, $<80 (76 or 78?). Moved further away from the city dropped to $65 then $55 after moving my car & home insurance to the same company, 3 car/truck & boat (doesn't cover if i sink it, only if it comes unhitched and hits someone).

One thing I noticed. Rental coverage was almost $10/mth but moving from minimum ~50k to 1 million personal injury was about 75 cents. I figure nobody will sue me for walking after a crash, but they'll sue me if I break their neck & don't pay medical bills. Oh and I don't have extra $5/mth personal items coverage. It's 5 bucks to insure 10k of belonging you leave in the car. I can't imagine leaving 10k worth of junk in my backseat while grocery shopping. Those two things are ~20% increase alone.
If you don't mind, what company?

Usaa covered like $250 personal belongings or something when I wrecked 2 years ago. I inquired about how I can up that as I often travel with expensive rods and reels or whatever else (not to mention it didn't cover what I lost in that accident) and my wife has expensive bags she travels with. I was told I have no option for purchasing additional.
I think I was able to claim using my valuable personal property insurance but I forget exactly. I know I did for my watch, some of my clothes I was able to get covered under the 250.

I was told the $250 is a state law

Insurance rates are so high because they pay for television ads where some dude is layed back with his six string. eyes rolling around like he just wrote the song about how Nationwide is on our side. lol.

Should be a song about "in our pockets grabbing money" instead of "on our side".

USAA. If you login their website. Then go to change policy. You can manipulate an itemized list and it will give you a new price. Just don't agree to change unless you really want to change it.

Ok just checked. I was mixed up my Texas and Japanese insurance. Both policies I declined car rental. Texas is 1,000 deductible not 2,000. Japanese policy I declined the extra 10k for items in the car for about $5 (~500yen) /mth.

Sorry wasn't trying to bs you. Just got them mixed up.

thanks for clearing that up! I am familiar with the itemized listing option and had never seen the extra 10k, and like i said the agents on the phone had told me otherwise.

i do carry low deductibles though. comprehensive i have 250 on my stang and on wife's caddy. 500 collision. that costs me $4/mo for the comp on the mustang and 2.5/mo on caddy compared to 500 comprehensive. changes to $8/mo and $5/mo if i go to 1000 comprehensive. I keep comp so low as we both chew through windshields like crazy. mostly from the oil field truckers around these parts.

I'll be damned.

My co-workers referred me to their insurance guy, and I got my premium more than halved. From 197.00 a month to 94.00 a month.

Happy days.
