Going to be installing an amp and sun tomorrow, a Kenwood X502-1, and a Kicker loaded CompR 12” sub. This setup is temporary, at least the box is since I’m going to be ordering a box from zenclosure soon.

On my old 2020 301a 9 speaker I tapped into the front speakers at the amp behind the drivers kick panel. It sounded fine using an lc2i to convert. This time around I’m not using a converter since my amp has speaker level inputs.

I went in through Forscan today and changed the EQ to 00 which should kill bass roll off. My question with my new car being a 401a with 9 speaker would the wires be the same colors? Also, to save some time, since I changed the EQ would it be just as good to tap into the rear deck speakers since access will be easy?

I tapped into the rear speakers in my 2018 shaker 12 speaker and it sounds fine...I had the stock sub so mine was a bit less tedious...

Always go with fronts as they are full range. I believe the rears are eq’d to drop off in the low frequencies which would impede the performance of your sub and the whole reason for adding it.

I went with the rears, and made the EQ change in forscan. It’s rather unimpressive to be honest. But then again it’s a 500w 12” sub.

I can’t hear any bass roll off, sun gets louder with volume so the EQ change worked. I think I’m going to get a bass knob for my amp, and try that. But this is just a temporary setup until I get my box, at which point I’ll probably go with a JL of some sort. My JL micro sub in my other cars hits every bit as hard as this 12.

I would also suggest to tag in from the front since they are full range.

It’s not bass roll off, the rear speakers are band-passed and don’t go low enough for accurate sub signal due to the low band freqs being filtered out. The front 6.5s are full range so you have a wider signal to work with.
A bass knob won’t make it any louder, it’s just a volume knob for the amp and if you tune the amp correctly you’ll have all the power it will push in your current setup at full volume. The bass knob is good for lowering the output for less intrusive bass on songs that don’t need it as much.

That would make sense. Also makes me wonder why a lot of people are able to tap in to the rears and happy with the results. This sounds not good.

I think a lot of people just don’t know any better. The majority of people are not critical listeners.

I went out afterwork and rewired it to front speaker wires coming out of the amp in the kick panel. Huge difference, I had to start over with amp adjustments. I’m still going with a different box and sub, but this is livable for a while. I think I’m going to go with the zenclosures behind the seat box with a front firing 12” JL 12w3. I want to also add a dsp and change the components too. Need to research all that still.

It’s like all that info has been posted here before 🤣 I kid, I kid 😉

I’d be wary with the zenclosure box. You’ll need to make sure sub has the proper air space. 12w3s are best in 1.125-1.25 cu/ft for sealed applications. Don’t forget the sub eats up airspace as well so take that into consideration.

There’s a ton of info in here for the rest of your future install but feel free to ask questions if your search comes up empty.

So it would likely be better with a TW3 then. I didn’t think about the sun taking up air space. The TW3 would be plenty, I don’t listen to a lot of hip hop or rap, mostly rock. So I think I’d still be happy with that combo.

The TW3 is an excellent sub for very small enclosures. In fact the JL Audio stealth sub for our cars is a 12Tw3.
