If he wants a cyber truck, more power to him. I'm glad there is one for him to buy. Just don't want them forced on me.

ā€˜Rolling coal’: Dealers charged in $74 million scheme to help trucks bypass emissions controls
Hello; here is a side of regulation I can agree with. I dislike diesel pickups "rolling Coal". I am pleased that particular aftermarket modification is being acted upon. Brings up an interesting dilemma does it not. I dislike the heavy black exhaust because it is unpleasant to breath. Some folks clearly want to have that sort of modification enough to pay extra for it.
Back in the 1960's to early 70's driving thru some big cities made my eyes water. So some sort of control over dangerous behavior was needed. Guess I do not want a wild west era of pollution so cannot in good conscience want no regulations.
Of course the trick is to have a way to reign in such an agency that goes too far in some direction. Might be the EPA one day. Might be the NIH and Covid vaccines another day. May be a need to clean house and reinvent these agencies. Not convinced any amount of spit and polish can disinfect these agencies as they stand. They are too entrenched.

Ev's are not silent. They make a horrific sound.
I agree; the pedestrian warning sounds are the most obnoxious I've heard. Since they are played thru the same speakers as the PA system (in Teslas as least), no reason they can't be pleasing instead of sounding like an ICE engine about to throw a bearing. Am looking forward to hacks. I'll go with Tennessee Earnie Ford:

I am sure people think our cars sound obnoxious. But that’s blasphemy right? Let’s just be closed minded about everything and turn this thread political.

Hello; I see a few EV's in my area but have yet to hear one driving by. I will take your word for the quality of the sound.

A buddy of mine picked up an Audi RS E-Tron and let me drive it yesterday. The acceleration was off the charts, so now I can see all the fuss about EVs, but the lack of any sound was very strange and made me feel disconnected from the car. Hard to describe but the car was unbelievably fast!

I grabbed a couple of pics of my good old fashioned ICE car next to the EV. I'll stick with my Bully but the EV was very luxurious.

The Audi is a phenomenal car, sister to the Porsche Taycan. Would not have one instead of my Bullitt but certainly as well as.

They sound like a golf cart, so basically no sound at all except a whizzing sound

I don't like rolling coal either but locals should enforce it when they see it, not fine companies who sell tunes.

Hello; I like to listen to music so a quiet ride would not be a disadvantage for that.

Hello; I could get on board with that as a better solution rather than big brother. Around here they do not enforce.

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/08/toyota-california-ev-mandates-impossible.html

This article dropped yesterday. I thought it was a good summary as to where individual states are with their EV programs, where consumers are, the industry is and how some of these issues came about.

https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/programs/advanced-clean-cars-program/advanced-clean-cars-ii

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the state of CA does have an EV mandate. X amount of new vehicles sold will be zero emission or lower emissions by Y year. Other states listed in this article have also adopted those rules.

https://nepis.epa.gov/Exe/ZyPDF.cgi?Dockey=P1019VP5.pdf

Does the federal government have an EV mandate? No. Unlike CA, the federal GOV is not mandating so many new consumer-purchased vehicles sold by such a date are EV or zero emissions. But the current Administration and the GOV in-general is using various mechanisms to steer people those products. Tax incentives, GOV fleet buys and tailpipe emissions standards are some of the existing methods being used.

I'm not here to debate or define "mandate".

https://www.epa.gov/emission-standa...about-emission-standards-reference-guide-road

https://www.sustainability.gov/federalsustainabilityplan/fleet.html

https://www.epa.gov/transportation-...line-major-accomplishments-transportation-air

Can the incoming Administration arbitrarily change some or all of the above means, so as to steer consumers to yet other types of vehicles? Yes. To a point.

Almost all of these programs involve the Administration (tens of departments), GOV legislation (535 people, in two groups, with IDK how many committees and sub committees), GOV funding (impacting states, companies and employees everywhere), automotive manufacturers (multi-billion dollar industry employing millions), state agencies (50, with 3000+ counties) and consumers (300 million plus).

It's like steering an aircraft carrier. While the intent of the GOV agencies may change on day one, actually implementing any changes will take time, possibly years. It depends.

YMMV.

Noise wise an EV shouldn't make any noise an ICE doesn't also make. But it lacks all the engine , exhaust and intake sounds.

There are regulations requiring EVs to artificially make "noise" to warn pedestrians who may not be looking. They are required below certain speeds and in reverse. Assumption is above that speed, pedestrians should hear tire noises, etc..

Teslas use a really annoying sound I assume because they are more likely to make inattentive pedestrians look to see where the terrible sound is coming from.

I would have preferred to be able to choose one of the warning sounds below:

Presently, Teslas are forced to use really annoying sounds I assume to be because they are more likely to make inattentive pedestrians look to see where the terrible sound is coming from.

One of the things to love about Tesla's is their sense of humor. Either before pedestrian warnings were mandated or before the authorities shut down the joke, below are the owner selectable pedestrian warning sounds that came with Teslas. Owners could add any others they wanted.

Been a while since I’ve been in a Tesla but they also used to have fart mode. My kids got a kick out of that one when they heard it.

Yeah. There is a long list of selectable lock sounds. My wife forbids the random fart and the random sound (which would include farts) options. Presently using clown horn:

Here is what Tesla pedestrian warnings sound like (reverse and drive):
