I didn't see it mentioned but the Cobra Jet recommends 5w-50 as well.

Switched over to the 5w-50 last weekend to give it a try, and I was amazed how much better the car ran. Wasn't spitting oil out the breathers, catch can didn't fill up. Car also stayed a little cooler. I usually don't have trouble getting the oil in the red after a few laps but after a full 20 min session is was all good, even the motor stayed cooler. So I'm going with a +1 on this for me. I'm a 5w-50 guy now.
Is it motorcraft 5w50 or another brand?

hate to add to this... i just tracked with the MC 5w50. ambient temps were in the low-mid 50's. oil temps stayed in the green, on the high-side of middle but no where near yellow. 3 sessions. 6k rpm shift points and i shifted up rather than holding it for the next corner if i was on the edge. another gt'er who is very experienced had no worries about doing his weekend with 5w20 MC. "whatever came with it". it's his 30k mile daily driver.

to me i think the bottom line is there are better oils than MC. the penzoil ultra appeals to me at 5w-20 for daily drive and probably a bit heavier with hpde. that'll be something i try out going forward but so far nice to see my results with the 5w50 so far.

I may be in the minority here, but I change my oil with full synthetic MC 5w20 every 9,000 miles and subtract 1,000 miles for every track day (about an hour of track driving). I normally get 2 or 3 track days in between some daily driving miles before I need to change it.

I was considering bumping up to the full synthetic MC 5w30 but was interested in the 5w50 and how either might impact daily driving or what's left of my warranty. Any thoughts on 5w30?

To be fair, the CJ is a car that spends 100% of its life at WOT on a race track. Not that I discount 5W-50, just an observation. I personally just bought some 5W-50 for my car based on the recommendation of Hillbank's Mike because beating on a forced induction car in 90-100+ degree weather is probably too much for 5W-20. In the winter I will use a slightly lower weight more than likely.

I switched to 5w40 motul 8100 xcess synthetic, and will buy that or motul 0w40 syn going forward. I'll be sending in an oil analysis on the xcess with 2 track days and street driving totaling about 2500 miles in a few weeks. Will report back with results.

Sorry to ressurect this but is anyone using Castrol Edge in a 5-40 or 5-50?

Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W60 was the oem recommended oil for e46 M3. It is an expensive oil but my analysis always came out cleaner than those running Royal Purple, Redline, Mobil 1 or Amsoil. At least on s54 engines.

I have great success on Motul fluids on my turbo GTI motor.

It looks like 5W30 or 40 seems to be the best medium for a heavily tracked car that is driven to and from track?

it has an engine!
I would not use a 5w50 on the street. Oil pressure is too high. Most people here or general dont have the advanced skills to push the car hard enough on a track to warrant 5w50. Unless you are an absolute beast/stig/probst or a high skill level instructor youll be fine with 5w40. Best part it has streetable oil pressure.

Thanks for the recommendation. Now to figure out what brand of engine oil, diff and trans fluids.

I guess people are using BG products with great success for the diff and trans.

I do
5w30 Quaker state Ultimate Durability due to its high temp stability since I am still rocking the factory oil warmer. Change after each event.
Amsoil 75-140 differential fluid. Changed after every 2 events.

This is with ~200 miles of track time at Circuit of the Americas being the first mileage on the sample, and the rest is daily driving here in Texas. I know some folks have been waiting for a sample of the new 0W40 SS. I ran this car pretty hard at COTA, probably about as hard as you can run this car considering how fast and hard that track is on cars. I think 0w40 was perfectly up to the task according to the results.

My M3 had better UOA from Mobil 1 0W40 than 10W60.

Theirs nothing wrong with using MC 5W50 for street or track use, heck, they use it in the Track Attack GT350s at the Ford Racing School in Utah and the GT350RC racecars. However, I don't think that using a quality 0W40 (M1, Castrol, Motul...) would be a bad thing either.

The most important thing is to let the oil warm up (>140*F) before revving it, going WOT, or beating on it. The worst thing you can do is redline a cold motor.
