Put a peace of card board under it to make a ramp for the oil towards whatever your draining your oil into Crack it loose let most the oil run down the card board once it slows then take out the oil filter
This and have a can of brake cleaner on hand to wash of the oil , actually did oil change yesterday

x2. Cardboard ramp, loosen and let it drip til it slows. Then take off filter. And brake cleaner and paper towels to spray off and clean the mess. I take my left front tire off too on mine reach in from the side.

Not on these cars but I have used a strategically cut up 2 liter bottle as an oil filter funnel before.

OP, the box your quart oil bottles came in is perfect for this.

I keep old t-shirts as shop rags. As I'm getting setup, I place several on top of the wiring loom and area.

Fabbing a down ramp from cardboard or tinfoil can help; butt this up against the engine, just below the filter. And I just had a thought about using plumber's putty or something tacky, to make a temporary sticky gasket and hold it to the block. Need to experiment with that next time.

You can also try loosening the filter enough where oil runs down the side of the filter and drips, into a waiting bin, funnel or catch. Once that stops, remove the filter. Some use the filter drip technique while a Ziploc is surrounding the filter. The oil drips into the bag. Later, the same bag is used to remove and dispose of the filter.

If you do not have one already, consider drain plugs from UPR, Femco and others. These will allow for a controlled drain versus having 10 quarts exit all at once.

I do the down ramp with cardboard and before that I also cover the wires with a small plastic bag. I hate the wiring getting soaked down with oil.

You guys are lucky, on a RHD you have to go in through the wheel arch as the steering rack is in the way.
Several thick cloths under the filter before I loosen it and keep it as vertical as possible while extracting it through the wheel arch, brake cleaner cleans up any mess.

The two things I’ve done to keep it clean-
Ronin oil plug- zero mess
Once that drains entirely, use a rag and take the filter off, moving only straight down.
This kept everything clean, didn’t spill anything at all. I think the angle you remove the filter once loose is likely your culprit.

I use a piece of aluminum foil to make a little aqueduct to my drain pan. Its rather fun to be honest.

I make a cardboard ramp out of a cereal box. I find the lighter cardboard is easiest to fashion a ramp that fits. The last time I didn't get a drop of oil on that harness. I also remove that entire splash shield. It gives so much more access that way.
