Having just bought one of the Ford Performance Racing School cars, I was perusing the Oasis report after hearing that all 18 cars had replacement engines. I found my car in particular (#17) had experienced severe vibration above 3000 RPM and had actually had a flywheel failure. This failure and resultant vibration caused both the engine block and the transmission housing to crack. I know of at least one other FPRS car to have experienced the same failure. How many other cars out there have had flywheel failures? How many have needed complete engines and or transmissions as well? Just a question to ponder.

TA #3 that I bought has similar repairs in the oasis report. Interestingly, on the list of spares for sale from the school are lots of flywheels, clutches and new hardware to do the repair (all parts are sold now).

Iā€˜ve developed an unscientific theory and wild guess. TA cars were driven mostly by amateurs doing their first track day, while driving a very high potential car they donā€™t own. Whatā€™s the one mechanical system that has no electronic nannies to protect it from complete destruction? The transmission, clutch, pressure plate and flywheel.

The corollary is that track cars raced by their actual owners donā€™t seem to have these problems.

I may be wrong so correct me please. Somewhere I heard the stock flywheel is more than 1 piece, possibly 2 differing materials?

If true that would be my theory on the failures

I had this happen to my car 2 weeks ago. Ford is covering the warranty and giving me a new engine, flywheel and clutch.

That vibration was so bad I thought the damn car was going to break in half. I bought the car like this, initially I thought it was bad tires. Ford took responsibility and is taking care of the repairs

It's a dual mass flywheel, there are multiple parts that go into it.

With all the failures one would think Ford would put solid flywheels on the track pack cars. Cheaper than an entire drive train.

Just make sure when you're installing a new flywheel you do it right. People don't realize that it will crack your block

Interesting you say that Rilla. Looking at the Oasis report on my car I found they replacement engine did not come with a paint mark on the flywheel for indexing the clutch. They had to order another flywheel.

So if I understand correctly, every car has had at least 1 engine replacement due to a broken flywheel?

And they/you are still going with the dual mass crap?

That's what I understood. All 18 cars had engines replaced and many had transmissions as well. Mine had both.

Since we were talking about flywheels and clutches I took a couple of pictures.
