How important is this part?

The little plastic piece in front of the rear tires...it scrapes my driveway entrance occasoinally and yesterday I found one partially detached. I will see if I can fix it but it is pretty small, aero wise. Is that it's function? Would I miss them if they weren't there?

I removed mine and I've never seen any objective explanation of the aero function on Mustang applications.
