Did you use the soccer fields I recommended? 😄
Great now I get to hear you turning and burning out of the Safeway or doing the RJR smoke out in the 395 to 95 north overpass after 11pm.

Hmm there was a little rain earlier...
You are officially ready to make your first grand exit at the next Cars'n'Coffee. Be sure the have the same laughing gal in the car too. ;=)

This is my only car, but also if I'm in a big open empty area there's nothing really that could go wrong, right?
Go wrong?

At a minimum you're chewing your rear tires to bits. Might even chunk them.

If you're trying drifting in a 1997 Toyonda Shitbox EX, you're going to be in a crappy car, with crappy tires, trying it at relatively low speeds. So the possible damage, and the cost of repairs, will be low.

In your car, if you crack up, it's time to prepare your anus for a financial buggering. Just to break traction means you have to have so much speed and momentum, that losing control while attempting a drift means you're going waaaaay faster, and will be much more out of control. So the damage will be much more, and the costs of repairing that damage will be much more.

And your insurance is going to tell you to take a long walk off a short pier.

Start out from a standstill in the center of a large open parking lot, turn the steering wheel left or right, blip the throttle a couple of times and dump the clutch during the upswing of the rpm’s. Feather the gas pedal continuously and enjoy the ride as the rear of your car starts to swing around. When you are ready to stop, simply push the clutch to the floor and let off the gas pedal simultaneously.

Oh, and be advised, most parking lots have cameras now. You may get a knock at your door, or a no knock smashed door.

Besides, as cool as it may looks you are putting serious mechanical stress to different components.

Be sure to understand that even if you don't crash into anything now, you will have to spend money later to have the car fixed.
Tires, drivetrain and suspension components really don't like it, and the act of making donuts doesn't prove you any good as a driver. Even my grandma can drift... but driving good, that's another story...

It's just a question of money. If you have it, you have it.

Following the suggestion that I provided should allow you to make perfect circles with almost zero chance of something going wrong. It’s when you try and drive out of that circle and do other things like change directions that it will require you to really be focused and on top of your game. Work up to that part later, but for now just stick with making circles.

There is a great option at Summit Point. https://roadpotomac.com
I wish there was something like that near me- would've sent my wife and kids. I like that it describes the differences of how fwd, awd and rwd perform during a skid. When you drift, you don't want understeer or oversteer. You want your front wheels pointed in the direction you want to go and hold traction.
Surface changes that affect traction can cause catastrophic over/understeer in an instant- not that I would know, though

ground was basically dry but I somehow found a spot in the city. I need lots more practice but I'm addicted. I think I was way too scared to turn tight enough and give enough gas for my first time
rip to my brand neww continental extreme contact dws06 pluses :cwl:
There are motorsport events for drifting. You should look into it. I bet the advice you can get there would be worth the fee, plus it is all legal. Drifting is not something I really want to do but I like watching events like these. I asked a guy about going through tires and he said most of the serious people buy cheap used tires and put them on for events. I don’t know how true that is but I sure would do that.

People here need to understand that you can do this type of driving without being an idiot on the street. Just like track guys, if we drove on the street like that we would be going to jail. On the track it is all day fun. Stay safe and have fun.

Doughnuts? Here is a video of me doing doughnuts in my last car...an all original 67 Shelby GT500... for some reason purists always got mad at me for treating it this way....
