FYI, waiting on Ford may take forever. It may be more beneficial to deal with any issues on your own down the road.

I think you guys should still try, but don’t get your hopes too high.

AI Overview

The class-action lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Gregorio v. Ford Motor Company, related to the Getrag MT82 and MT82-D4 transmissions in 2011-2019 Ford Mustangs has not been dismissed; it was still being litigated as of mid-2020. The lawsuit alleged the transmissions were defective and prone to slipping, jerking, and premature failure, though Ford denies a defect exists and attributes issues to wear and tear. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found no safety risk with the transmission and closed its investigation.

Key Details of the Lawsuit
  • Allegations:
The suit claims the MT82 and MT82-D4 transmissions are inherently defective, suffering from premature internal wear and eventual failure.

  • Problems:
Owners reported transmissions that slip, jerk, clash gears, and have harsh engagement or increased shift efforts.

  • Ford's Position:
Ford has stated the issues are due to normal wear and tear and not a defect.

  • Ford's Actions:
Ford issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) to dealerships with instructions for fixing some of the alleged problems.

  • NHTSA Involvement:
The NHTSA investigated the complaints but found no evidence of a safety risk, though it did find issues were more prevalent in colder weather.
Current Status (as of the provided information)
  • The class-action lawsuit is not dismissed and was an ongoing case in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan as of June 2020.

  • The lawsuit covers Mustang models from 2011-2019 with the MT82 and MT82-D4 manual transmissions.

I tested my 2020 today. Lugged it alot, esp in 4th, no noise at all. 22k miles and I did do BG fluid myself, so I know it s filled properly. FYI.

Thanks for the info, curious if you have a short throw shifter? While I can see my particular noise being low speed gear rollover noise I'm not lugging at 1900 in 4th. Ford want's me in 5th already for best fuel economy 😂. I did order Motul DCTF as it meets Ford's spec but It will be a few weeks before I have a chance to change it.

all OEM on the shifter (except a Ball from a Mach 1).
I think I was around 1500 in 4th and gave it some gas, still quiet. FYI

when you change the fluid get a nice clean pan so you can inspect the old fluid. Plus you ll now know the level is correct. Cheap way to check out a few things.

Thanks, I'm going to run the fluid through a paint strainer to check for metal.

Mine does that sometimes too. I just learn to give it more rpms and not try to up shift so soon

Figured I'd post an update for anyone else with a similar noise.

Finally got a chance to change the trans fluid today

and found metal contamination after draining it through a paint strainer. Refilled with Motul DCTF and noise still persists but didn't seem as loud. However as the weather has cooled the noise was less pronounced on the factory fill so I'll have to wait till warmer weather next year to see if it really made a difference in noise. Didn't drive far after the change but felt like it shifted smoother.

As small as those fragments are I would have thought that the internal magnet would have picked them up. Are they steel or aluminum? That will help you know where they come from and maybe identify the issue. If it is part of the case, it could be time to open it up for inspection. I have an issue with mine popping out of second gear when just driving in second and backing off the throttle or down shifting. It is strong and doesn't pop out of gear if I run it threw the gears while under acceleration. Even if I really push it hard. So, I know that my second gear is worn and needs to be replaced. I am going to replace it with a Calimer stage one transmission this winter. Maybe stage two. I have mods done to the car and have around 480 - 500 rwhp. I want to keep my Barton shifter and aluminum drive shaft and Calimer is a direct swap transmission.

Hit a few fragments with a magnet as suggested, didn't try them all as I might need that strainer to help my case for a new trans under warranty in the future. They are a combination of ferrous and non ferrous material. I didn't realize the manual had an internal magnet, my plan was to order the magnetic drain plug from LMR when It comes back in stock and install it in 1k miles while straining the fluid again to get an idea if its just manufacturing/break in debris or a larger ongoing problem. Thought about trying BG for the next fill but will probably stay with Motul as it meets Fords spec and don't want to give them any ammo to deny a warranty claim if they ask for fluid receipts.

I just bought the BG but haven't changed fluid yet. I got two gallons for $53.00. It didn't come with the pump. I made a container years ago that I can connect an airline and just open the valve and it does an instant fill, in 20 seconds. I had to fill a differential with gear oil, and it was taking forever, so plan B build a pressure vessel, and force feed the damn thing. It works great, and it has been sitting on a shelf for years. Now it is time to dust it off and put it back in service. I think it holds a little over a gallon of fluid. Good luck with Ford. And save the particles from the transmission.
