This may sound like a dumb question but... I've noticed( including myself) everyone who breaks a halfshaft always breaks the driverside halfshaft. I've even noticed on the 2020 gt500 the halfshaft on the driverside is alot thicker then the passenger side. Would I be ok just buy the driverside halfshaft and keep the stock halfshaft on the passenger side? Would that cause a problem or damage anything?

If your car is automatic. I wouldn’t replace anything. I made 200+ passes on my 15 GT. Never broke an axle. 1.4-1.5 sixties. Manual might be worth it.

What gets the shafts? Drag racing from full stop?

Hard launches at the track is what gets the OEM half shafts. The DSS and gForce half shafts are all great options depending on your power level that will hold up street/ strip.

My driverside halfshaft broke closer to the diff then then the wheel. When most of the shafts break, I noticed they always break closer to the wheel. Is there anything I can gather from it breaking near the diff? Something else that may need to be replaced? A sign that something else is worn out? Is there a reason why I broke the halfshaft closer to the diff vs the wheel is the question I'm trying to asking lol.

List of my drivetrain parts

BMR vertical Links
BMR cradle Lock out
Solid inserts Diff bushings
Stronger diff bolts
New GForce renegade axles
3:73 gears
Aluminum driveshaft
Mcleod RXT clutch
Stage 3 Ben Calimer transmission MT82

Vortech supercharged

The stock shafts are garbage if your gonna make any serious power. I have gforce Ford racing’s 1500 hp axles. And don’t settle for the gt-350 half shafts they’re not much better then the stock half shafts..

Weak link always shows up - especially when you start to get REAL Traction. There's a lot of slop in the factory rear suspension / driveline. So once you start getting rid of that slop you essentially find the next weak link in the system.

It's not just a S550 thing. I went through the same thing 30 years ago with my '67 Chevelle. Clutch can't take the power, upgrade clutch. "Bullet proof" Muncie can't take the power, upgrade transmission hard parts. See ujoints / drive shaft / rear end and axles.

FYI - that OEM slop is what makes these cares ride comfortably without a lot of NVH as well.

For the track, go bias ply. Much easier as far as drive train shock for a manual transmission. But that traction WILL put the stress on something else.

First time I launched a S550 on track with bias plies, I let off out of the hole. It launched so hard I thought I broke something. Nope - that's called traction.

The 18 and up manual transmission Mustang GTs have thicker 1/2 shafts on the drivers side. They are cheap used on ebay. Not necked down like the automatic or '17 down cars.
