When you house shakes like that, do you have to get someone to inspect it to make sure it is still structurally sound?

The house I was renting was built in the 20s. I'm pretty sure it wasn't structurally sound BEFORE that.

just kidding. but no, we didn't have anyone look at the house. I figure if it made it through the 89 one, it's going to take something pretty serious to do any real damage. The construction is different out here... houses are made to shake and be ok... at least the newer ones are.

Yep. The house I own was built in 1954, so it still went through the 89 quake. After that though, they added a second floor, which is the only thing that makes me nervous. It could be worse though, at least I'm not on the side of a mountain!

yeah, I'm in the middle of a HUGE flat area that is supposedly on bedrock. Evidently, that is a good thing. I'm just hoping and praying that there isn't a humongous earthquake until after we move out of this place.

That would be a $2 million house here depending on where it was located. Property taxes would be $20k per year.

Housing anywhere between San Francisco and San Jose is completely insane.
