What we have in awesome roads we make up for in oppressive taxes and house prices.
Our taxes and housing are pretty ridiculous too, but not nearly as bad. Where I live, a decent 4 Bedroom around 2,200-2,500 sq ft averages about $350,000-$400,000, property taxes around $8,000/yr.

The rent prices in San Fan made my eyes nearly pop out of my head though :eyebulge:

That's not much more than the annual road tax in Belgium for a 5.2L engine...

Wow....

My ~2,200sf, 4br house on a wooded acre with an attached double garage and unattached deep triple garage set me back $215K a decade ago....and taxes are about $1,600.

And I thought that was high....

That would be a $2 million house here depending on where it was located. Property taxes would be $20k per year.

Housing anywhere between San Francisco and San Jose is completely insane.

People who have lived their whole lives here don't understand that the rest of the country is not like this. I don't know why so many people want to live here. We definitely won't be here forever, but we'll enjoy it while we are!

I just don't see how people can afford to live in California or the city of New York.

All you have to do is come to terms with the fact that 90% of your paycheck will be going to housing.

For us, our house is our retirement/savings account. As long as the housing market doesn't crash, we will be looking pretty good when we move away. It's definitely a gamble for us though.

Most can't. But if you can afford the monthly payments for the rest of your life...

Well come to Texas as some as you can and you will see how far your California housing dollar can go.

That is utterly ridiculous. The house I lived in from 10-18 yrs old (and my parents are still in) was bought in the late 90's for $225,000 and is 2400 sq ft. It's only about an hour from where I live, but still very much in the Chicago suburbs. Today it's worth well over $300,000, but that initial amount kind of is my grounding on what reasonable is. The area I live in now is a much more desirable area to live, so I get why home values are higher, even by as much as 40-50%. But $2M for something like that? GTFO! :eyebulge:

I don't understand why people continue to attempt living in California. I mean yeah, the weather is great and there's lots to do, but how can you justify almost an order of magnitude difference in housing price? I couldn't. That and the taxes. Sheesh!

Don't forget the Earthquakes. Mother Nature's way of saying "you can't have that there"

The last major earthquake in Napa happened the night my wife got here 2 years ago when we moved. It was like a 6 or something, not even that bad, and Napa is a far distance from where we live, and it woke us up in the middle of the night, whole house shaking violently. I can't imagine a real one that was close. We've had a few others that we could feel...

Florida has storms though... We got pretty used to that. I'm sure we can get used to shakers as well.

When you house shakes like that, do you have to get someone to inspect it to make sure it is still structurally sound?
