So I'm am finally about to do this along with my GT350 manifold install. I got hit with ye ol' covid in the fall when I was going to install it and then it got too cold to install it and my garage barely fits my car in it so I had no room to do it. While everything is out of the car, I installed the heatshield Products I-M shield on the underside of the intake manifold and their heatshield mat on the airbox. I got the 24" x 48" roll and it was way too much. Could probably do 2 or 3 airboxes with that amount. The material cuts very nicely with a decent pair of scissors and cuts ok with a razor blade.

**WARNING** If you are going to do this, do it outside and wear gloves and long sleeves. It is essentially sticky fiberglass with a reflective coating and the fiberglass gets EVERYWHERE when you cut it and makes you extremely itchy. Ask me how I know lol.

I started buy making a cardboard template of the airbox lid and leaving a little extra room to account for the dips in the lid and have extra for trimming

lid template.jpg

I cut it out, peeled off the sticky backing, and lightly put it in place. I then used a wooden roller to have it attach firmly.

I used another piece of cardboard and traced the opening in the lid for the intake tube and cut it out with a decent amount going up towards the top of the lid. Took a bit of trimming to get the curve just right but it was worth it. I applied it and trimmed it to fit on the box.

Now came the fun part. Doing the airbox tray. The GT500 airbox is pretty much a shrunk down a bit laser scanned copy of the space it occupies with a lot of complex shapes. To tackle that, I laid out some masking tape and traced the spot with a sharpie. Peeled it off, cut it out and slapped it on the heatshield material. Make sure you put it on the shiny side as if you put it on the back side it will come out reversed. I'd leave about 1/8" around what you trace to give it room to conform to the curves.

I continued this around the airbox until I had all the major areas covered. I also used some scraps to fill in smaller areas. The material conforms to curves quite well and having the roller really helped to get it stuck down. I only had to do probably 10 small relief cuts for tightly curved spots.

I then went over all the spots between the big panels and the sides of the lid with a roll of the heatshield material that was more lie a roll of tape. I got the 1 1/2" by 20 ft roll and have way too much left over.

I still have to attach the snorkel and wrap that and I wat to test fit it again and see how much room there is on the side where it sits against the inner fender. There are a lot of indents for clearance on that side and I want to make sure the fiberglass material doesn't interfere with it fitting, plus I don't think that side will see much heat. But if there is room I will apply it on that side as well as I have so much left over.

All in all it took me about 3 hrs to do but I was trying to figure out how to tackle it and I started off being very meticulous, but by the end I was just slapping scraps on and trimming them to fit while on the airbox.

Here is what I used if anyone is interested in doing this.

Heres the GT500 airbox with GT350 intake tube. Everything fit right up with exception of that foam peice on the front. It's kinda mashed in there but it's all sealed up well enough. It may look like theres a gap the foam is being pinched. The GT350 snorkel portion of the airbox is a direct snap on.

Also forgot to mention the foam "weather strip" tape used around the intake tube since the GT500 intake tube is a lil larger.

I just installed my PP2 kit on my 2017, and see higher IAT's over the stock intake setup. Did you get just the GT500 box and lid (KR3Z-9661-A and KR3Z-9A612-A), or did you need anything else for the gen2 setup? I'm hoping to use the GT350 tube/filter/etc.

Just curious, does the PP3 not seal to the hood like the bullit and mach 1 do?

It's currently 108 here in California and I'm seeing 111 IATs...

This is what I did. Took about an hour it is now painted. Sitting in a drive through it still goes to 110 or so but cools off to 5 above ambient in about 1/4 mile. This is on a 90 degree day. The cover just snaps into the groove on the factory seal. Cost was an old cardboard box and some duct sealant tape and an old can of paint. Sorry no pics of it painted unless someone wants to see it.

You'll also need this foam piece to seal the box.

I just got the box, lid, and that foam piece. I transfered the metal clips from the 350 lower to use the 350 hardware to bolt it together.

The airbox is so thin it really needs the insulation. I ordered the heatshield I'll report back if it helps at stop lights.

Well, I know I’m late to the party, but a few weeks ago I installed the PP2 kit. And like others, I was getting higher IAT’s over stock with the new kit. I ordered the three GT500 parts for the air box and it is sharp. Shout out to @ZenkaiRacer for verifying the parts list, and the tip about the foam around the GT350 tube to GT500 air box. And to @LevittownFordParts for the goodies shipped quickly

That looks great, but inquiring minds want to know... What sort of improvement did the GT500 airbox give you?
Before and after temperatures? Are IAT's the same or similar to the OEM airbox?

Hi Brian,
we look forward to some info here on the IAT's so we could perhaps put a parts kit together for others that may be interested.

Thank you for the support!

The GT500 airbox only solves the high IAT issue. No improvement over performance, but I believe everyone would understand that.
  • With the stock Mustang GT setup, I would see 5-10 degrees above ambient. All day, everyday
  • The FPP2 setup with the open GT350 airbox saw around 20 degrees at red lights. Moving, even in traffic, and it would drop fast and be around 10 degrees above. Saw 120 often, didn't impact cylinder temps, but why have my girl breathe all that hot air
  • The FPP2 setup, with the GT500 airbox is very new to me, but it seems back down to close to stock. Waiting at lights doesn't make it raise much, and nothing like the open airbox. I saw temps raise slow, but I believe it is the thickness of the plastic.

Like I said, it is new, and I'm driving a bit this week. I'm also heading to a meet this week, so I'll get some better numbers and report back. But I think this is a better option.
Hope this helps. Let me know

Yep. That's the reason we want this. The tune already does the performance aspect. We want our OEM air box IAT's back.

@LevittownFordParts a kit for this would be an awesome idea.

I didn't use the gt500 lid but I did seal it off. I still had heat soak problems at idle. I had to apply stick on insulation to the outside of the air box and this helped it a lot. I still don't like the heat soak and am going to add another layer of insulation.

The GT airbox is much thicker than the GT350 version. Also the 350 is much closer to the engine both of these allow it to heat soak much faster then the stock GT units.

Did the GT500 cover help on heat soak or did it just allow the temps to fall faster like on my sealed GT350 intake.

So I have some reports on IAT's. Mind you I have the insulation on my airbox. I also have the honeycomb sanded open on drivers side with a VelossaTech big mouth.

97°F Ambient
Cruising on the highway IAT was 101°F
Got off the highway and sat at a red light for 1 minute. IAT got to 104°F
Drove about 1/4 mile at 30mph IAT dropped to 103°F
Pulled in to Dunkin and sat in the drive thru for 7 minutes. IAT rose slowly and peaked at 113°F and stayed there for the last 2 mins.
Drove a half mile at 45mph and IAT went back down to 103°F

I have the insulation also. I'll record my temps but I think yours are much lower, at least at stops. I may be buying a 500 lid.
