The redesign is based on the Alfa Romeo chassis.
There is nothing that exists for the Challenger or it's replacement that would hit for 2018, that is based on a non L platform.

There is alot of talk about using the Alpha's, or versions of them. However nothing is confirmed. None of those cars where every designed to meet US Crash standards and the are only getting tougher.

The 2018 or 19 may be a Giulia based car....

And it will be fast no doubt

http://www.allpar.com/news/2016/09/alfa-car-sets-track-record-33252

Here are the latest engine rumors: http://www.allpar.com/news/2016/09/engine-rumor-roundup-changes-32881

Looks to me like the only V8 will be in the Hellcat. I suppose they will use Turbo Pentastar V6's in the Giulia based Challenger RT/SRT follow on. A Turbo 4 may be used in the entry level (SXT) Challenger follow on car.

Article Quote: Input from several sources have brought some changes to our recent engine rumor roundup. Again, moving from big to small:
  • The Viper V10 (the only engine with a Chrysler Corporation core) will be dropped when the last Viper run ends in 2016-17.
  • A Hellcat upgrade may come, after Dodge figures out how to handle the extra power – 2017 or 2018. Hellcat production is currently slated to last at least till 2021, outlasting the 5.7 Hemi.
  • The 5.7 Hemi V8 is indeed slated to stop production in calendar year 2018, though engineers are still improving it, and it’s very popular on the Ram 1500. Redriderbob wrote that the company is stockpiling Hemis, and may change plans if EPA standards relax.
  • The Pentastar V6 is supposed to get its long-overdue direct injection, increasing power and economy alike; the 3.2 will be dropped and a 2.8 added for export.
  • The turbocharged Pentastar reputedly has a 400 horsepower goal, setting it above the Hemi V8. The company would likely add to the Hemi’s price to make up for CAFE fines.
  • The turbocharged Hurricane 2.0 four is reportedly in the GME engine series. The launch of the Hurricane is still apparently some time off, but calendar-year 2017 seems likely — in the Compass replacement. It’s reputed to build 250-300 horsepower depending on the application, but delays have mounted in final development.
  • A new(ish) non-turbocharged “GME” (Global Medium Engine) four cylinder was launched by Alfa Romeo already; the Chrysler version is still some time away. It reportedly borrows from the current 2.0/2.4, the Fiat TwinAir, and the Pentastar V6.
  • The new GSE (Global Small Engine) is also coming, to replace the Fiat 1.4 and other small engines.

From Autoblog.com:

....The entire Challenger lineup will be redesigned in 2018, which includes switching over to the lighter Giorgio platform - the same one that underpins the Alfa Romeo Guilia.

The new Chally will be "American-Italian Muscle". At least the Mustang and Camaro are still fully 'Merican!

Also, the Challenger has had German DNA in its platform since it came back. I don't think a Fiat platform would necessarily mean that it will lose its identity.

I've had my share of AWD. For a performance car, they hook up like mad, but in my experience were just not fun.

Finally! Good for dodge. They figured the best way to move their heavy cars from the start line is to add awd which will add more weight and bad mpg but who cares. Now lets see Ford adding the awd setup of the Focus RS to a mustang twin turbo v8 and v6, and single turbo I4.

It looks like whether you spell it Alpha or Alfa, the Greek symbol
Alpha.webp
may become the symbol for a Pony Car that lost it's way.

Why all the hate about it sharing an Alfa platform? The challenger is just so heavy as it is... it REALLY needs a new platform.

I think the Italians might have occasionally made a fast car, no? Lol.

Hell the Camaro was running on an Aussie platform..

The Charger/Challenger/300 is on a very old German platform.

This isn't anything new.

I'm thinking more in terms of the Alpha platform being too small for decent Pony Car utility and the Alfa Guilia looking like it might top out with a TTV6.

According to unconfirmed sources, there is no room in an S550 for both a V8 and AWD. However, the Getrag DOES SUPPORT AWD.

The Getrag is mated to a good portion of current Ford V6 engines.

Serious question:

If an AWD, 375hp EB3.5 was made available for volume, would it be worth it?

Look at it from every angle though, as an enthusiast, financially and marketing, current trends. I think it might be time for an AWD V6 Mustang once the base V6 is dropped. I'd like to hear how that might affect the MSRP on existing models.
