One of the reasons I have Uninsured Motorist on my policy. Got into an accident in North Carolina on vacation, hit and run, other driver had no insurance, so they basically told us sucks to be us. Had to get a new vehicle as the old one was totaled and couldn't get anything for the totaled one.
Uninsured Motorist covers medical costs, not damage to the car. If you didn't get anything from your policy for the totaled car it was because you didn't have collision coverage.

I'm just mentioning it in case anyone gets or is thinking about adding uninsured motorist coverage thinking it will repair/replace their car if hit by someone without insurance. It won't.

That is not entirely true. There is uninsured motorist property damage for up to $3,500. This coverage is available if you do not have collision coverage.

The following link goes into details about the different types of uninsured motorist coverage. Also note that it does vary state to state and anything I mentioned in this thread pertains to my knowledge regarding CA policies only.

Aug. '13 I was in a 4 or 5 car pile up on the interstate as I headed into work one morning. Woman that caused it all had her insurance expire at 12 am that day due to non payment. In SC you are required to carry liability. Sucked for me because my company had to pick up the tab to total my '95 GT.
And fast forward to this past January where they dropped me because of that and an hail storm that I had no control over.
Had to shop someone that would cover us and it went up about $1300 per year for us.

Sorry to hear this man, I'm a claims adjuster and CA is one of the 11 states I handle, and there are so many uninsured people in that state it's sad.

Luckally the damage is not bad, the insurance company will take him to collections if he has no insurance. U can take him to small claims for dimished value and your deductible if it's not waived but if he has no insurance he likely has no money and that will just be a giant waste of time.

If you have any questions on the claim process pm me. Glad you were alright.
Thank you, I will definitely take you up on that!

lol, I'll see what happens. That would be interesting, not sure the cost difference.

The guy did say the price the insurance companies use for the Ford OEM exhaust parts is sometimes more than most aftermarket solutions so I guess we'll wait to see what the adjuster says. I believe he or she should be out to look at the car today or tomorrow if they have not already yesterday.

Right now actually I am looking for another rental car. Going to return the Camaro V6 convertible this weekend and am looking to pick something else up and just have the insurance company reimburse me up to my rental limit and pay the rest if necessary out of pocket. Options are limited but trying to get into a 2015 Challenger SRT (not a Stang but better than the Camaro V6!). Fallback options are last gen M3 or maybe an FR-S.

WTF, no insurance? Is that common where you live? Any way you can sue the guy civilly?
Does your insurance have uninsured motorist protection?
Glad you're OK though.
California has a huge problem with this. Texas too. Basically there's a significant chance that if you're hit the person will turn out to have no license, no insurance and a rare medical condition that makes them lose the ability to speak english when they're in trouble.
