My wife has a superhuman sense of smell. Occasionally, she complains that my 21 GT has a gas smell. I don't smell anything...but I figured I'd ask to see what I should check. Only mods are the stereo and H-pipe. I need to check the clamps on the H-pipe, but that shouldn't smell like gas. And no, I haven't punctured my fuel tank...that would be pretty obvious for even me to smell.

Are the windows up or down when she says she smells gas? The only time I smelled gas inside was when my line ruptured. The line is composed of a stainless steel and nylon (pressed onto
the SS). Mine ruptured right where the nylon line slipped over the SS.

I remember reading an article where a Ford employee had altered the flare on the line causing it to weaken in a fashion similar to what I experienced. It may have been on an Ecoboost, but I can’t remember for certain.

Click on post #4 in the link below to see the fuel mist coming from the the line, as well as hear it hissing.

Pop the back seat base out and check around the pumps, check all the fuel lines around the tank, under the car and in the engine bay. Check lines key on/engine off so they're pressurized.
When does the smell happen? Meaning is it related to anything like a hard pull, a hard turn, a fillup?

Yep, pop the back seat and start there.

If you don't find anything there you can check the fuel line that runs up by the driver's side VC and firewall area.

And then of course, you can trace the lines under the car back to the tank.

If there is a leak. Even very small, you will smell it quite easily when you're on top of it.

Is it possible she's smelling exhaust?

Good advise guys! I'll check out my pumps to see. She said that it hasn't smelled in a while, but it was there last weekend. No hard pulls...she was in the car. It sat for a few days.

You said pumps, are you running dual pumps?

Did you do a cat delete? If so, that is usually where abnormal fuel odors will come into play (aside from leaking pumps, leaking fuel gaskets at tank and/or leaks at engine for fuel injectors or fuel psi regulator).

This was an issue with the early trucks, the fix was to tighten the spark plugs.

Mine just started getting the fuel smell and I also got a check engine light for evap tank filler seal code.

I'd check to see if you have that code pending. Hurts nothing to check spark plug torque.

Very possible it's exhaust. I need to make sure my H-Pipe clamps are tight, it's been about 3 years since I installed them.

The one time I smelled gas in my car, I tried to squeeze a little extra in after the pumped clicked off. I know better, but there was a hurricane on the way
