Hay if I ever hafto go to an electric car, I am making a mp3 of my 06 running through gears To play.
Yea, they'll have to put a speaker on the outside to play that track too. Eventually there will be people getting thumped by those elusively quiet electric vehicles... :p

The EB has artificial engine noise pumped through the speakers
They never said it creates Artificial Engine Sounds. What it does is similar to Noise Cancelling Headphones. It esentially cancels out Unwanted, Unpleasant Sounds inherent to an Inline 4 Cylinder Turbocharged Engine, by Creating a Sound Wave, using a Microphone in the Cabin not the Engine Compartment, that is the Exact Opposite of the Unpleasant Sound. As someone else pointed out, BMW uses the Exact Same Technology in its M-5 and M-6 but BMW Actually does "Re-Create" Actual Engine Sounds via Computer and play them through the sound system, which Ford is Not doing here.Similar technology is also used by Porsche and many other High End Auto Makers. The 5.0 GT Is the one that has Engine Noise Piped into the Cabin through the "Sound Symposer" aka Intake Sound Tube.

Here is an article from the New York Daily News about this technology.

Ooh well I'm not buying it so I don't need to worry about it.

True, I'm not familiar with what the Mustang is doing. And in fact now that I dig in it turns out the Focus ST isn't quite as artificial as I thought.

On Popular Mechanics they talk about how it's done in the Focus ST.

Dubbed Sound Symposer, the system is designed to amplify engine growl once the driving inputs get more aggressive. While the BMW system plays simulated engine noises through the stereo to beef up the sonic experience, Ford’s is more organic. Under normal driving, the vehicle's soundproofing reduces everything to a dull hum so the Focus isn't roaring like a lion during your morning commute. But push the car hard and a valve opens on a pipe connecting the engine bay to the cabin, channeling the sound directly from the induction manifold to the dashboard. The system is customizable, so drivers can modify when the system kicks in, or fun-haters can turn it off altogether.
Not sure how you're suppose to customize it as they suggest is possible.

That sounds like the Focus uses induction tubes like the GT. The EB uses microphones and the stereo.

Mm. Yea I would have much preferred the technique they used with the ST (at least conceptually it's more organic). I wonder what brought on the change to use the stereo?

Once again, just like TampaBear said, Pay attention.... THEY ARE NOT PIPING IN OR PLAYING ENGINE NOISES OVER THE STEREO.

It's called Active Noise CANCELLATION. The mics pic up the unwanted sounds (road noise, unappealing engine frequencies) and plays an opposite sound wave which cancels out the noise.

No sound tube, no mics in the engine bay.

Then what is the droning sound that some of the reviewers are talking about in the EB that they said would get really bad for the driver on long rides?

Typing in caps "yelling" about something and being wrong is never a good thing. Please explain why the engine goes silent when you pull the fuse...did you read post one in this thread? It digitally transmits audio through the speaker system. Here is the picture from post one with the statement circled....some people...smdh

They DO amplify the engine sound through the stereo. This has been confirmed many times.

yes, I'm fully aware of what caps mean. That's why I chose them.

I would speculate that the reason of the difference in sound is that when you pull out some frequencies, it will emphasis others. These frequencies may not be as "pleasing" to some ears as Ford thought they might...

Bottom line the engine noise is pumped through the sound system..FACT
