Damnedist thing happened to me. I have been using Shell fuel for several months now because it is on my way home. Recently though, I had to use Chevron a few times because it happened to be around when I needed fuel.

It didn't really dawn on me immediately but I have tested it twice now and confirmed my findings. For whatever reason, using Chevron fuel makes my check engine light go away. The check engine light comes from having Kooks 1 7/8" headers with green cats.

I have tried everything to make this damn light go away, first thing that consistently makes it go away. No clue why though. Anyone know the difference between Shell and Chevron 93 octane? It has to be something, it cannot be a coincidence.

I thought I had at one time a breakdown of the additive differences (not type) between the major top tier gasolines but cannot find where I saved this info (or link). It specified that Shell did have the most, or more than the other TT brands.
Not sure why this would affect your car though, so what actual code was it throwing?

The techs at Steeda in Pompano told me they hate Shell gas and swear it loses power.

I've used Sunoco or Costco for the past several months. My headers and cats pop the same code. Maybe I'll try Chevron and see what happens.

P0420 code means that your rear O2 sensors are reading that the green cats aren't doing their job sufficiently (removing contaminant from exhaust gasses before it exits the tips). You can have your tuner turn your rear O2 sensors off so that code goes away. If you have to go through emissions, then that will be an issue. If not, you'll be good to go!

Also, don't people pay extra money for green cats to AVOID the CEL?

As for the Chevron fuel, my guess is that the fuel burns cleaner than Shell, which is why the CEL/P0420 code goes away. That is good to know for all you guys that have Chevron's near you!

No, Shell is pretty much everywhere out here. I've used it at different stations and different cities, same thing.

Interesting. If it works I would just stick with it. I always thought Shell was high on the gas last.
