I have a 2021 Mustang GT Auto PP1 with a Roush supercharger. Since it has the analog vacuum guage, he Ford folks thought it unnecessary to enable the digital vacuum guage which is perfectly placed in front of your eyes. I replaced the analog vac guage with a vac/boost guage. I'm trying to use Forscan to turn on the digital vac guage and hopefully vac/boost.

I have an OBDlink EX cable. I can connect, It sees the IPC, I can read the module and it says vacuum guage disabled. If I try to enable it and and write it, it goes to 73% and stops saying service procedure interrupted and reverts back to disabled. So have a bought boat anchor software?

On my 2020 GT PP1 I was able to just plug it in and it works replacing the old one

Odds are you need a newer /beta version of FORSCAN. I had this issue back in Sept of '19 when I bought my GT - and immediately did the Sync 3 swap I already had from my previous Mustang. I did some digging on FORSCAN's forum and apparently a bunch of 2019 vehicles were getting the same errors when trying to write changes to certain modules. I downloaded a beta version and it worked with zero issues.

I have the same. Its on a bad angle for viewing. My 13 GT 500 had it right in the same place the 301A has the digital gauge display. Its the perfect spot. Cant understand why they couldnt even leave the vacuum guage enabled? It costs zero.

Heres a bit of bad news from someone on the Forscan forum:

Modern Ford models have protected networks.
ELM327 adapters are not going to work as intended.
Any type of performance flash will interupt communications and adaptations.
It will take a factory style scan tool to access these new networks.

CAN FD is one of the newer communication protocols. It is far more secure and very reliable.
It is regarded as being faster to communicate and program on-board controllers.

CAN FD (CAN Flexible Data-Rate) protocol is included on many Ford 2019 and up vehicles.

A Can FD Adapter will be required to communicate CAN FD-equipped vehicles with handheld scan tools.

Modern laptops and tablets with enhanced VCIs include many of these new protocols including CAN FD.

With Driver Assist Systems, much of the diagnosis is accomplished via (DoIP) Diagnosis over Internet Protocol.

*BOOM*. I posted a few times on this site that the above was coming...

SSM 49089 - Effective Aug 13 2020
2008-2020 Various Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Vehicles - Replacing/Upgrading Original Equipment SYNC/Navigation System Components Is Not Supported

SSM 48442 - Effective Jan 10 2020
2013-2020 Various Vehicles - Adding/Removing Features Using Programmable Parameters

SSM 46332 - Effective Jan 24 2017
2008-2017 Various Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Vehicles - Replacing/Upgrading Original Equipment SYNC/Navigation System Components Is Not Supporte

and I had posted this last year: https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/ssm-48340-sync-“gt”-screen-ssm-48442-sync-mods.137347/

Basically the meat of the above SSM’s is this:

Ford is getting tired of working on vehicles coming in where someone has upgraded As Built modules and/or the As Built code. If it’s found to be modified, it won’t be covered under warranty... which depending on shop labor hours and any R&R costs, that’s gonna be out of pocket cost to the customer.

The above direction being distributed in SSM’s is only the start of Ford cracking down.

It will get worse as technology progresses and vehicle operation is more dependent on its modules to operate (start & run)... As I said in other threads on this site, it’s going to get harder for the vehicle owner to modify As Built software. Randomly pulling harnesses or disconnecting modules in future vehicles will also adversely affect vehicle operation, because the vehicle will rely on future tech for 100% operation.

It's no BS. I'm sure someone will eventually "crack it", but for now, looks like the fun ended because too many folks wanted to use Social Media to post and create vids to say "look what I can do with XYZ Vehicle Manufacturers modules"....

That's not new actually. Ford was more aggravated (They weren't the only one) because you could enable features that were inherently built into the car - the only change was a line of code.

They can only void the warranty on the piece of electronics in question. Sure if you replace your Sync 2 with Sync 3 components and enable its operation - they won't warranty the Sync 3 - because it wasn't part of your car when it was built / sold.

Sure, if you brick a module doing something - there is a chance it won't be covered, but that's the same for tunes , exhaust and everything else. This whole thing is nothing new. Manufacturers will change / update and someone will figure out how to modify it. That won't change.

I remember tuning TBI and TPI ECMs and adapting them to different applications / vehicles and then OBD2 came out and people were "they are locking it down, we won't be able to do anything" - ironically the more data-driven, the more that vehicles start implementing coding to enable / disable features, the easier they are to 'hack'.

You think they're going to have trained computer people at dealerships? No, they'll use updated versions (hardware / software) of IDS and other systems. Systems and protocols designed by third-party companies. Systems where access to this data / instruction is sold to dealerships, independent garages and individuals. Same as it is now.

Like I said - try the newest version of Forscan - likely a beta - if they don't have one now, they will soon. Ford or any other manufacturer can only lock down the vehicle data so much. Look at John Deere - that backfired on them. Same thing with Ford. EVERY authorized dealer has to be able to access the data for servicing issues. They are NOT going to hire specialized people to deal with this.

The DMCA even got an exemption in 2015 for this very reason.

And I think in the very near future, these canned performance tunes are going to go the way of the dodo bird. Not only are the manufacturers putting the brakes on this but the EPA/Carb/laws are making it a punishable offence to offer any items that changes the PCM calibration. All I was trying to do was to get a working digital vacuum/boost guage that was in the drivers line a site. I would have thought they would have at least left the vacuum guage operational but I guess they figured if you have the analog PP1 guage, thats all you get. I guess I could have ordered the 401A, but the only thing that appealled to be me about it was the digital dash. 4K was a bit too steep for that. I could use that money for better rim, tires or suspension components. I think these marketing people are out of touch or its the bean counters.

How did you you connect with your Roush tune? Didn't you have to put in a Strategy number or something?

Just needed to use the stock calibration identification. Its beginning to sound like too much risk and too much work to even bother with this, although I might get the J2534 as it allow you to use the Roush RDT software for tune updates and diagnostics.

If you down load the as built data from the Ford Motocraft service web site, you can open it with a text editor. It will look like a bunch of mumbo jumbo but near the bottom you will see the calibration code. Just an FYI, it didnt work for Forscan. I think the 2021's are too new and it didnt recognize it. I got in touch with the Forscan developers and they wanted the VIN to look it up. I'm a bit suspicious sharing that over the internet so I looked up the window sticker of a similar car to mine and gave them that VIN. They sent me a code to use. It works, but as mentioned there are many more road blocks.
