Obsessed garbage is a clown. So many better choices for this sort of info like LarryAMMO or Esoteric Detail
I guess I should have clarified myself. Larry from AMMO NYC is very good at communicating the detailing concept and doing your best to avoid swirl marks and protect your paint. If you want a deep dive you can check out his AMMO NYC Academy on his website which is fantastic information, but a very deep dive that some people may not be interested in. His products are proprietary to his brand and expensive. I've tried a few and just don't see enough of a difference vs lower priced products. But I don't kick him to the curb, I've purchased from him and his detailing videos are fantastic.
I don't personally like Matt's (obsesses garage) personality and demeanor, but the guy really deep dives into product testing/detailing equipment.
If there is one thing I finally learned in my 60 years on the planet is that you can take something positive away from every person, book, experience, etc.
I just take the parts I can use and leave the rest. I've learned to appreciate every persons knowledge and opinion, even if I don't agree 100%.
Matt really helped me figure out my pressure washer situation and his wash bucket dollies and OG drying aid are the bomb.
Now, do I want to equip my garage with everything he says and sells? No. Is some of it overpriced and over the top? yes.
I get exasperated by the need for "You tubers" to keep switching their brands..
rinseless washes for example.. I have been using ONR for years now and while many claim I should be switching to this product or that product (check out the professor guy in the bow tie as an example) I don't really need to switch to anything else unless they stop making it.
To answer the OP first question, here are a few of my tips:
1. Never drag a dry towel across your paint, use some sort of lubrication- This includes both washing AND drying the car
2. Don't "scrub or polish" your paint, if something is stuck on, use more lubrication or some sort of bug/tar remover. I see guys at car shows scrubbing on their cars like they are cleaning a cast iron pan.
3. Whether you use a rinse less wash, waterless wash, soap and bucket method, just use the best products and system you car afford based upon your circumstances (access to water, budget, etc).
4. Keep your detailing arsenal simple.. many products have multiple uses, don't get caught in the trap of having to buy a different product for every application. Yes, there are some that are specific, but honestly you could clean the majority of your vehicle inside and out with just a rinseless wash product like ONR
5. Keep some clean microfiber rags in your car with a quick detailer or rinseless/waterless wash product to clean off any bird poop or other substances that get on the paint
6. If you can afford it, get some type of ceramic coating applied, even DYI products can help reduce the workload or washing the car and helps keep stuff from sticking.
7. if you are caught in a 'dirry rain' or sprinkler system, wash or rinse the car ASAP. Don't let that stuff dry on or bake in the sun.
8. Finally, relax and enjoy the car, it's going to get dirty, swirls or imperfections are going to happen to some degree, no car is perfect. yes, you can do ALOT to avoid them, but enjoy driving the car first and foremost.

[...] and is now covered in dust and light water spots (easily wipe off with a finger).

Any tips for washing without creating swirl marks in the paint? I normally use foam and the two bucket method but even that will swirl paint sometimes.
First, stop doing what you are doing. You are introducing swirls in the paint by doing it.

You sir, are an exception to the rule! LOL
I was addressing that tip to the avg guy who does not want to get overwhelmed, maybe with limited resources and time. You are another fantastic resource for any aspiring detailer out there! I have definitely taken your advice on several items!

Ok, that’s a pretty broad stroke, what about them is clownish? Be specific, with facts and reasoning.
Sorry about that. I should have provided a bit more with my original comment calling the guy a clown. Personally, I find it a bit distasteful whenever someone tries to mislead an audience by misusing or making up a health condition in order to profit from while acting like they are an expert of certain craft. Obsessed garbage has profited immensely telling people he suffers from ocd (while never being diagnosed with it) by bending the truth of his Vasovagal syncope diagnosis. I’ve just never been a fan of his as he just seems to try so hard to have people believe that he is some sort of expert. Don’t get me wrong, he is a great businessman but his biggest contribution has been the placement of pressure washers on the wall. His belief that just because he has the means to purchase something it automatically makes him an expert of that item. It’s gotten to the point now where he has some believing he is now able to properly judge items without even needing to touch or use said item. Basically, he’s part of today issue with social media and how people can be easily fooled into believing whatever they are told online because they don’t take the time to verify anything being said.

I did ask for verifiable facts and you provided none. He’s on record as being diagnosed OC (can you prove he hasn’t?) and he’s never claimed to be an expert in anything. He’s stated multiple times he’s not curating items because they are “the best”, he does it because they are the best for him and is sharing that with the world. It seems more like you never actually watched any of his videos in which he talks about how he got where he is and his struggles with balancing his life and are just projecting some insecurity.

Of course the typical response here is to say I’m a fanboi or defending him as if I’m being personally attacked, and that would be a lazy, ad-hominem retort.

I have heard him say multiple time that he was medically diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

And he isn't deceiving or ripping people off by being OCD, rather its part of the story as to how he started Obsessed Garage. Nothing more. He has a love or hate personality, but that has nothing to do with setting up a business and selling stuff.

Well said :). I have not heard his whole story so I can't comment on that, however while I don't necessarily "hate" the guy, I find his demeanor VERY offputting and the sound of his voice very grating on the senses. Hence I can't stand watching his videos or hearing his voice. I am sure he is a brilliant businessman, and his products while on the more expensive (and therfore unobtainable by myself :) ) side I am sure they are great, however I chose not to buy them (nor Pan, Detail Co, or any of the other overrated Youtubers)....

Well said
I'm with you on your feelings about MM Alex and I thought I was the only person whose ears kinda hurt when they hear his voice. He can't help that but that fact doesn't lessen the negative effect.

I also think that he has acquired a bit of an ego which, while understanbable, is not flattering and I can see where some could interpret his mannerisms as if he considered himself an expert on one subject or another.

Nonetheless, I think one has to acknowledge that he has found or designed some "over the top" great products and made them available to us regular Joes albeit at some rather steep prices. I've always been a big supporter of the old adage,

"You get what you pay for"

..and I think for the most part, that's true of his product line across the board. However, we have to keep in mind that his goal in creating OG was to provide the absolute best product for a given subject area and price be damned for the most part.

I often think about the guy when I'm using his wonderful QC's to hook up a water source or foam cannon to the Kranzle that of course came from OG. Without a doubt, that unit is THE best pressure washer I've ever owned and by a factor of at least ten but then, it does come from Germany, not China. The spec MTM gun and wand plus the rubber-shrouded nozzles are, IMO, some of the best product designs that I've ever seen.

So, I cut ol' Mattie some slack with his back patting and other not so great character traits and at the same time, thank him for starting a business that has been most helpful to me.

I can see how his personality is off putting to some. But I don’t watch his videos to enjoy his demeanor, I watch them to learn and hopefully to avoid mistakes he’s already overcome or considered.

I can definitely relate to the saying "you get what you pay for. I frequently use that adage, also buy once, cry once. BUT, if I can get equal products that work just as good, even at the same price from someone that doesn't make my skin crawl I will do so. Like I said, he is probably a great guy, and I do agree his contributions to the community especially in the world of wall mounted pressure washer systems is very valuable... I did look at some of his systems to take inspiration for my own setup, but I built one on my own doing my homework that works fantastic, is very high quality stuff, and was a bit cheaper to piece together myself. I know there are lots of folks that dont have the inclination to do that, and would rather just pay for a turn key kit, but I like the challenge of DIY myself :) Part of the joy of the obsession for me :)

I can agree with that as well. BUT, if I can get valuable knowledge from another person or channel that is more engaging to watch, I do so. There are lots of fish in the sea, and OG (as well as Pan, Eddie, Jamie the Cleaner, etc) is just one I chose not to engage with nor patronize his business. Lots of great content creators that are more enjoyable to watch for me, as well as business that sell top shelf products.

There is certainly some ego going on. His videos basically took the Kranzle brand from a pokey little pro-only brand to a worldwide benchmark available to anyone who sees value in the commercial grade aspect of them. The same for the pressure washer stubby gun via MTM and Mosmatic. The argument is, well those products existed before he came on the scene.................yes, but how many average Joe's knew they could also have such a thing on their pressure washer at home? Yeah, not many. So in some cases, his ego is well justified. However.......................

In the quest to make content, which is basically his form of marketing, he has many times undermined his own success by showing off new products waaaaay before they were a sellable proposition. Now, that does in effect gauge the demand for a new product, but it also gives competitors a heads up to what you have coming.

The most prominent being the Apex Stubby Nozzle for Ego blowers. By the time they went into production, Ego themselves had come up with their own version and basically killed Apex overnight. All because he showed his hand too early.

The MTM SGS28, which is now a VERY popular and widely sold gun, was basically Matt's creation in response to laggy stock coming from Mosmatic. Matt basically asked MTM to make him a short gun with a integrated swivel on the superior SG28 gun, which then became the SGS28. Again, he gave early access to what was coming, compounded by not being able to commit to exclusivity on that product................................so every single detailing supplier now carries what he originally came up with.

Similar situations have occurred with Active pressure washers, CobraJet hoses, Swisstrax, certain Kranzle pressure washers, Pressol, CR-Spotless, Koch Chemie, Bead Maker.....................................basically he taught people what to buy but didn't have exclusivity, so people went and bought the products elsewhere, all the while the respective companies benefited from the FREE content made by Obsessed Garage. That would SUCK big time.

It's now to the point where he is more guarded with upcoming products rather than sharing his book of ideas with the world. You will also notice more exclusivity, which started with the OG-only high-flow Kranzle 1322, his own OG manufactured high pressure hoses and OG-only version of the Cox power reels. In recent times, he now has exclusivity on Bilt Hamber and Pressol for the US-Canada markets and has his own DI water treatment systems in the works.

So while it looks like he is a shrewd business man, he has also made plenty of mistakes.........................at least he is trying to innovate and find new opportunities.

I can see how his personality is off putting to some. But I don’t watch his videos to enjoy his demeanor, I watch them to learn and hopefully to avoid mistakes he’s already overcome or considered.
Same for me. I couldn't begin to document the number of times he has offended me with some of his beliefs, but I've learnt so much from that channel. I particularly love seeing the garage transformations, If I had that chance, I'd be following the same path.

I guess I just understand where he’s coming from, even if I don’t agree with everything he says.

I see many people comment on his videos complaining about his prices, his opinions on what’s good and what’s “junk”, and that he’s “only targeting those with money”. Now while some of them might have a shred of viability to those arguments, it seems that most of them are just complaining that they can’t afford the nice things in life. Or they don’t understand his process of curating through thousands and thousands of dollars worth of products just to figure out which one is the best for himself. (Key word, “HIMSELF”) His stated intent is to share what he’s found and what works for him in the hopes that other people can save time and money on better products than what is mainstream.

And to be honest, his prices aren’t that bad when you think about the effort he’s gone through to bring superior quality to the masses. I’ve compared just about everything I’ve purchased from OG and 9 out 10 times their version is superior.

But some people are good with “just ok”, and that’s fine.
