Did my first track event at Barber (near Birmingham) this weekend. Five 30 minute sessions per day, (10 total 30 minute sessions, or about 450 miles on the track).

This was through an outfit called "JustTrackIt" and if you're in the southeast and haven't heard of them I can't recommend them highly enough. Very well organized, safe, fun event, complete with classroom and in car instruction for novices (me).

I had the only GT350 there, and it generated a lot of interest from all corners! There were a great variety of cars there, from a 1979 RX-7 that was bought new 38 years ago, 1 owner, to plenty of Vettes (including Z06s and ZR1), many Porsches new and old, lots of heavily modified 3 series BMWs, and a handful of exotic track-only machines. There were a few mustangs there, including a late 90's one with a built engine (equal acceleration to the GT350), an S197, and a Roush S550.

I had an instructor with me on every session, and by day 2 the organizers and instructor wanted to move me up to the "intermediate" run group from the novice group, so I could worry less about passing all the time. Once in that group I was able to get many consecutive clean laps without being held up or having to let anyone pass. Temperature during the day was around 60F; had a wet track on the morning of day two but it dried out later.

Some things I learned about the car:

Fuel: you burn a lot. I was barely able to finish 2 sessions on a FULL tank. Toward the end of the second session I was getting the "25 miles to empty" alerts. Bring some jerry cans in the trunk and plan on topping off after every session. My Avg MPG showed 6 mpg and I'm just a beginner!

Coolers: I think in higher ambient temps even with the track package we'll be seeing some worrying temps. Engine oil and axle oil both topped 250F with OAT of 60. Trans stayed cooler than that but it has that big radiator out front and isn't working as hard as the engine oil cooler. Now I see why the 5w50 and I might even use 10w60 if its going to be hot.

Tires: The MPSS are still looking good and they performed well in the wet and the dry. Airing down helped I think.

Brakes: great! never got soft and of course they got used a lot.

Seats: Even in the Recaros I had to brace myself some, but they really hold you well. I can't imagine having less bolstering though, I'd be exhausted from bracing myself after 1 session probably.

Engine: Instructor sometimes stopped instructing so he could hear the "best soundtrack out here"

Just can't get enuff!
What a blast the 350 is on the track isn't it? For a car that's still quite hefty, it definitely competes or even surpasses against other powerful cars with much less weight.

What are your thoughts on the handling & balance?

Thanks for the great feedback! 6 mpg isn't too bad actually. Sounds like you had a great time!

Do you have track experience in any other cars you can compare the GT350 to?

I made some newb mistakes early on. I don't know if you're familiar with Barber but turn 4 is an uphill right-hand kink that leads to a straight that you can't see over. As soon as you crest that hill if you are on the throttle too much in a powerful car and haven't opened the wheel up enough, the rear end lightens and you can spin/lose control. That happened to me on my second session and I went off the track but stopped in the grass without hitting any barricades. That was the only "oh shit" moment. I did get some thumbs up from one of the organizers for actually driving it and not just poking around the track at low speed as some new car owners seem to do. There were a lot of Porsches and vettes in my later intermediate run group and the instructor helped me figure out the best lines for the mustang to take based on its extra weight, different balance, and brakes. There was one 911 that was much slower in the curves that would not give me a point-by for a long time, and I couldn't quite run him down in the straights because even though the GT350 puts down power pretty well out of the corners, the 911 just does it better. Some owners of much smaller/lighter cars were impressed with how late this big beast could brake. The lighter cars seemed to be able to change direction very quickly and while the GT350 does very well in the transition you still have to concentrate on a smooth weight transfer. There's no beating the laws of physics and it will not cooperate with you being abrupt. Dry laps I used track mode with the firmest damper setting. On wet laps I used sport mode and the softest damper setting. Almost all cars except for the novice group were modified to some degree. Mine was one of a very few if any that were completely stock.

Edit: This is my first track experience ever, with any car. I did get to ride along with my instructor in his modified 3 series for a couple of sessions. It was completely stripped out, M3 engine, slicks, suspension, roll bar, etc.

The Tech seats are fine if you lock your seatbelt tightly. It's not the bolsters that keep you planted, it's the lack of travel on the restraints.

Barber is an awesome track. You will be hard pressed to find a finer facility. It's probably my favorite track. I raced there in my vintage car and ran my motorcycles there at a school event.

That's awesome. Barber is the one track down here i've yet to do, only heard great things - need to get out there.

The museum there is awesome even if you don't like motorcycles, you can look at the Lotus collection.

Don't expect real high speeds, but it had just about every type of turn you can think of...

This is good to hear. I'll have to take my CG Lock out of retirement.

I watched an E36 M3 bury its nose about a foot deep in the sand at Turn 8 during one of my visits haha.
