Small parts of the oil always passes the piston rings. That's the nature of this engines.
I cannot agree more , that is why I suggested taking the extra measures to help your system stay in the very best of shape.

I love my Ford's and treat them that way and have gotten exceptional results.

Tolerances

With today's advances in metallurgy, I really don't think you have as much break in contaminants as you did before. Engines run much tighter tolerances today as well.

What is Ford's suggested first oil change interval?
Take the oil cap off your ecoboost and watch all the Blow-by huff out. I have never seen anything like it with the amount of pressure the crankcase is under because of the looser tolerances the engine is built to so it will withstand more abuse.

I have heard it from people in the loop on how that was done for the exact purpose I mentioned above.

I am not here to flame or debate, more to simply share the facts on what we are dealing with on the Mustang Ecoboost and even the new GT's. Our new GT has so much Blow-by that we collected 2.5oz. to 3oz. of oil in the first 2000 miles with my daughter and fiancee driving it.

Thank you for chiming with your thoughts as well.

Joe

How do manufacturers get away w/ modern thin oils like 0-20?

Also, why does Ford recommend 10k mile intervals?

My presumption is that the thinner oils allow better fuel economy, as do some of the additives put in synthetic blends.

On the 10k mile oil change interval, there have been a number of lab tests and real world testing done by everybody from automotive manufacturers to oil companies to independent testing facilities that indicate 10k miles between changes with full synthetic oil is the correct interval unless some other factors are involved (hard use, lots of crap in the oil, etc.).
Because full synthetic motor oil is able to withstand more heat cycles before breaking down, the oil change cycle is able to reflect that.
If you ever read publications having to do with engine repair or semi trucking, it feels like every issue has something of that sort.
Doesn't make for particularly interesting bathroom reading material.

Back many years ago when I was the "new guy" at a large company, they had a whole fleet of semi's and Dodge pickups with the Cummins turbo diesel engines. Being the low person on the totem pole, I got to change the oil and filters in the fleet.
Long story short, we replaced the oil filters several times between each oil change. If the oil change interval was 10,000 miles, the filter needed to be changed each 3300 to 3700 miles. I caught more crap over the filter change interval that over the oil change interval if I didn't change them out at the right time.
Quite often, the testing machine showed the oil as still being usable even at 15000 miles.

From that time, I have gotten in the habit of changing the filter twice as often as changing the oil.
Change filter each 5000 miles.
Change oil each 10000 miles.

So the interval is 10k mi... I believe I saw it posted, in one of the catch can threads, that people are gathering ~2oz/1400mi in the can... that's 14 oz lost in an oil change if no catch can is installed.

I am very curious to see if anyone will lose a quart of oil by first oil change.

How many quarts does it take? Have people been able to find suitable filters at the big auto parts stores, or are you taking your cars to the dealer? I am ready to change mine, I am at 2800 miles.

I did my first oil change at 3680 miles. Used Motorcraft fluid/filter.

My oil life monitor read that I had 67% of my oil life left when I did the oil change. If this continued at the same rate, the monitor would've suggested changing my oil at 11,040 miles!

BTW, it took 6 quarts of oil, not the 5.7 that the manual states. I first filled it with 5.5 quarts, and it barely touched the bottom of the dipstick. 6 quarts put right in the middle of the hash marks ( I checked 15 minutes after running it with 6 quarts just to make sure all the oil made it back to the oil pan ).

Thank you for sharing that's good to know as my car is a hair under then.

I will likely change the oil when the service indicator tells me, which I expect to be around 6k. I want to give the factory fill additives a chance to work first.
Same here!!! I did the same with my 2011 Mustang and had no problems.

Here's the thing, oil change intervals, in my opinion, are very subjective. If you putt around on the highway only, perhaps 10k would be survivable. If you're at the track every weekend and drive it like you should all week, 10k is ludicrous.

Personally, I changed the oil when it was brand new at 5,000KM's (3,000 miles) and during the summer I will change it after every track day, regardless of miles, but other than that i do drive the car extremely hard so usually ever 3,000-4,000 miles, and in the winter when it's all street driving and not nearly as much hard driving as summer, generally every 5k miles.

I will change mine when the indicator tells me. Looks like it is set to around 10K miles. This is how my 2013 fusion was as well, I changed when the car alert when off and never had any issues during the 50k miles i drove the car.
